SPinoff to how much $$$ you have left...

this IS NOT about anyone specific ( i can't keep track of who responds to what threads- LOL ) but i've noticed that whenever theres a post like this, people respond about having no money left at the end of the month and how expensive things are. BUT, whenever theres a post about holiday gifts or wedding gifts, people will respond saying they give $300-$400 for a wedding gift, and spend a ton of money on holidays gifts. or about how they have a cleaning lady and eat out several times a week.... i just find it kind of ironic. if theres no money in savings, why give so much as a wedding gift, or why not cook at a home a couple more times a week?

I don't think you have to give expensive gifts (or give beyond your means) to make people happy.

Well, when I say I don't have money left at the end of the month, it's because I pay myself in savings first- so literally, I sometimes am down to $0.20 in checking after all is said and done and am "broke" until next pay check b/c I wont' touch my savings account..

and i don't give 300-400 for weddings either- my retirement is more important.....

this is what i do, too... my paycheck gets direct deposited into my checking, and then i transfer most of it right into my ING account to get some good interest.
i agree about the wedding gift.. its important to "spoil" the people who mean a lot to you, but you also have to think about your own future, too. giving $$$ gifts can add up alot over time...

I agree and disagree. While I am one that doesn't have much at the end of the month, I still do enjoy going out for dinner with friends and splurging on little things here and there.

I own a house and have 2 jobs. I think sometimes I am entitled to enjoying the $ I have (that doesn't go to bills).
But, on the other hand, I don't spend frivilously. I don't buy designer clothing, eat caviar and drive a Lamborghini.

I think sometimes we have to watch where we spend our money.

I ADMIT I AM SO ONE THOSE PEOPLE! But when I am complaining about debt or being broke i am just really mad at myself for being carless.. i dont blame anyone but myself . i am not looking for a solution , i am very aware of the solution but just like a diet .. i know what i have to eat to lose weight but i dont do it all the time bc i am fall into temptation .. even though sometimes we complainers may look like we are looking for solutions/answers .. i think most of the time we are just venting about our faults .. sorry Chat Icon

Everyone has different priorities and life experiences that lead them to the decisions they make.

There is something to be said for both ways. My father died at 53 years old with a bank account full of money waiting for his retirement...I just wish he gave himself more, vacationed and enjoyed his money instead of never enjoying what he worked so hard for.

Same here. I spend more money on those important to me than i do myself. We usually have a few thousand at the end of the month. But that goes into savings and we don't touch it. We are saving to get out of NY, but when there is a wedding or when christmas comes, i make sure i get for everyone else before spending on myself with whats in my checbook after paying the bills. If it means giving $400 to my best friend for her wedding then so be it. I will just have to sacrafice and wait for the next 2 weeks worth of paychecks.

Re: SPinoff to how much $$$ you have left...

It depends on your priorities. You can make the same amount of money as someone else and have completely different ideas about what you can and cannot afford.

it's the same thing with time...when people say "I wish I had time to go to the gym" or anything, and plenty of people with the same amount of time or chores find a way to get to the gym or volunteer or whatever it is because they have their priorities arranged differently.

Re: SPinoff to how much $$$ you have left...

I think it depends on your prorieties as well.

DH and I struggle. We pay all our bills on time and don't have a ton of extra to play with. I also sell ebay which has turned into our spending money. I do like giving nice gifts (not $400) and like going out once in a while. DH and I may go out to eat once a month, take out once a week. But, and a HUGE BUT, when we do go out to eat, our bill is like $40. We don't splurge. I haven't bought myself things in a long time.

I will be the first to go without something in order to give someone else what I think is great gift that will make them happy.
