Spinoff to Ketchup post: To Refrig or not to refrig?
dh grew up with ketchup being kept on the table. I grew up with it being kept in the fridge. This is a point of contention all the time, because dh does not like his ketchup cold, and I won't leave it out because I think it will spoil. DH rightly points out that restaurants leave it out all the time. But what do you think grows in there, if anything? Looking for opinions...

1. I'm pretty sure it says keep refridgerated on the bottle
2. Restaurants use WAY more than you and DH do so it is constantly refilled.
3. They are supposed to put the bottles in the fridge at night.

Re: Spinoff to Ketchup post: To Refrig or not to refrig?
Interesting...well, the bottle of ketchup says, "For best results, refrigerate after opening" which would lead me to believe that it doesn't HAVE to be kept refrigerated, but refrigerating it will probably keep it from going bad sooner.
Most products that need to be refrigerated, like mayo, will leave out the "For best results" part.
I'm no expert, but I'd imagine that in places like diners, the turnover rate of ketchup bottles is rather quick, so the ketchup probably doesn't even have enough time to go bad. I guess the vinegar, salt and spices in ketchup probably preserve it longer w/out having to be refrigerated.

Me and DH used to fight over this when we first moved in. I won, and our ketchup has been chilled in the fridge since.
The still tasty website says to refrigerate it.

Marital bliss all for the cost of a ketchup bottle

I will tell you having worked in restaurants for many years that it DOES spoil. Basically we were instructed to fill the ketchup bottles from a larger ontainer with a funnel. You will notice clear bubbles in the container and it does get rancid-has a sour taste. i don't think it will make you sick, but I used to get in trouble all the time for throwing out the funky ones

we refrigerate, although we go through so much ketchup in this house (due to DH's obsession) that we might as well leave it out 24/7.

Totally keep ours in the fridge!! I like it cold anyway, but didn't think it would go anywhere else.
Here's a question... where do you keep your syrup??

Real maple syrup - fridge
Fake syrup (Aunt Jemima, Mrs Butterworth) - doesn't matter

Same here. I grew up keeping the ketchup in the pantry. We've had Costco-sized bottles stay in our pantry for close to a year, and never in my 29 years of life have we had a bottle of ketchup spoil.
I HATE cold ketchup!!

I can't imagine not putting it in the fridge. As for what might grow, I wouldn't take the chance to find out.

Re: Spinoff to Ketchup post: To Refrig or not to refrig?
Fridge. I never even considered leaving it out. DH and I have debated the fridge vs pantry for the following:
Bread (Me: fridge, DH: counter/breadbox (which we don't have))
Peanut Butter (Me: pantry, DH: fridge)
Chocolate Syrup (Me: fridge, DH: pantry)
Pancake Syrup (Aunt Jemima - DH: pantry, Me: fridge)
I won on the bread and PB, and he won on the syrups. He's the only one who uses the syrups, so I gave in.

I don't like cold ketchup so we keep it in the cabinet. Has not gone bad yet. Growing up my mom kept it in the fridge and my brother and I would microwave it!! LOL
