spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
who has the kitchen gated off?
he opens the broiler and the oven. Also gets the fridge open, but that would just be a mess. A hot oven scares me...
or does everyone's kid just go about their business?

Christopher is a nightmare in the kitchen in just his walker, I will definately be gating it off when he is mobile on his own.

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
Our fridge is right near the entrance to our kitchen....plus, he is not walking yet, just crawling and pulling himself up. So it's easy access to the fridge. Once he starts walking, I will gate off the area past the side of the fridge.

I usually have a gate for the kitchen so I can keep them out of there when I need to.

my kitchen is not gated off. She knows not to touch the oven (she goes up to it and says "hot, hot"). She does like to open cabinets, but we're working on that. She can't open the fridge, and she has the fridge phonics toy.

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
My living room, kitchen and dining room are all open. There's only 1 gate, so they can't get down the hall to the stairs. They pretty much have free reign. I just taught them early on not to touch the oven, and she stopped palying with the bottom drawer too.

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
When we lived in our apartment, it was gated off, now that we live with my parents, it's an open floor plan downstairs, so there's no gating it off. She learned quickly not to open the fridge or touch the oven, and I'm grateful for all those times I had to scold her for touching them because now I won't have to gate off my kitchen in our new house.

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
We have an open floor plan apartment so we can't gate it off.
She can't open the fridge, but when she finds out, we're in trouble. She's fascinated with it when it's open.
She doesn't touch the oven. We say "no, hot" to her all the time.
She loves the cupboards. We have locks on them but sometimes we forget to lock it up. We tell her "no" but she tries to grab whatever she can and run off.

Hey, at least you didn't have to give them a bath that night
Right now mine are gated in the family room/playroom... in the last few months I'm so glad I don't have a kitchen that opens to a great room. They really don't have access to the rest of the house unless I'm carrying one... or yeah, a few times I've had to carry both

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
We don't gate off the kitchen. She doesn't really try to do anything (yet) except climb into her highchair.
If I open the fridge or freezer she'll play with the stuff on the door (I've reorganized it all to make sure she can't reach anything glass or dangerous).
I keep the dishwasher locked and only open it when she's in her chair or another room.
All the cabinets are locked, but the pots and pans (she has a blast in there.) I also hang little toys on the cabinet handles and those keep her safely busy.
She loves her fridge farm magnets (although I often find them in the fridge )

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
Our kitchen is open to DD. We have any cabinets that would be dangerous secure with safety locks. We have the knobs on the stove with the safety covers. We will only use the oven if she is sleeping; when she is awake, we use the convection oven. She isn't strong enough to open the fridge and she hasn't figured out the oven (isn't even bothered with it).
She has lots of magnets to play with on the fridge. She loves it! She has the magnetic fridge farm.

Re: spinoff to magnets on fridge...is it only me
My kitchen is gated off.
At my mom's house, there is no way she can gate off her kitchen. Plus, everyone is always in there, so it would be just really mean if we didn't let Steven in there. He is ALWAYS opening the oven, the fridge, the garbage. He's a terror. But, he just gets reprimanded and he goes away for 10 minutes, only to come back again.
You'd be surprised how smart these little buggers are...he went to open the oven once when it was on, we all yelled "HOT, HOT" and he ran away. Now, when he feels the oven is on he doesn't go near it.
