spinoff to Middle class...

what does being middle class or having a middle class lifestyle mean to you? I think these are very subjective terms based on what we feel middle class is.

Re: spinoff to Middle class...

Am I allowed to ask a question in relation to the OP's question, or is that a violation of LIF law?

What is the deal with "lower" middle class and "upper" middle class? Who created these terms? I think whomever it was must have been trying to make themselves feel better or something. They must have been on the cusp of poverty or being rich.

Re: spinoff to Middle class...

Middle class is always subjective -based on how many people have more or less than you. But in my mind, middle class means you have all of your needs met - a place to live (not necessarily owning, though), food on the table, transportation (car, metro card, whatever), clothes, and don't have constant worry about having enough to pay your bills each month, hopefully being able to put money away for your kids' college fund and retirement.

Re: spinoff to Middle class...

here's my thought......you have a nice house where your children( real or in the future) have their own bedroooms, both parents have newer cars, take family vacations( not always to Disney, but maybe a weekend somewhere nice) you have a small cushion $1000-$3000 in savings, you can pay all of your bills but not worry about getting your nails done, hair done, bowling, pingpong, season tickets whatever because you cando it all with in reason with some mad budget skills! But you DO HAVE a mortgage, car payments, credit cards and you have to take out these loans. None of this is paid in cash except maybe the vacations, and you are in debt. Not crazy you'll lose your house debt but managable debt. see above. That's middle class REALLY living within your means and making decent money ie: $75,000 and above JMHO

Re: spinoff to Middle class...

I think it is safe to say that the majority of us are middle class people. We all have our struggles, but for us to be able to chat on a comp everyday is reason enough not to be considered poor.

obviously, it means different things to different people... for me, it means being able to pay for your basics ( rent, mortgage, electric, water, food, transportation) WITH a few "upgrades"
( cable, cell phone, going out to eat once or twice a week, a newer car). it also means you should have a few thousand in savings as a "cushion", and not much "bad" debt ( credit card, etc)

I don't know, to me this is extravagences that go well above what you need to be considered middle class. We have Mets season tickets, and they are a $15,000 indulgence that we can do because we don't have kids. I would have no problem cutting them out (can't speak for DH! Chat Icon) to provide for necessities.

I also don't think it's a huge issue for children to share a room. I don't think it means you live in poverty if you have two kids of the same sex that share a room.
