Spinoff to Nap Nanny Posts-Baby sleeping in swing with reflux-how doI break this habit?
I just thought to post this when I saw the nap nanny posts.
DD is 12 weeks tomorrow and a reflux/milk allergy baby. She sleeps very well in her Little Lamb swing (hence the reason I am considering stock options in Duracell ).
DH and I are going to NY Thursday and although she will have swings at both my ILs and my parent's homes, I would like to possibly get her to sleep in a crib. Once I come back to FL, I definitely want to start getting her to sleep in her crib. We do have a reflux pillow I can use.
I've tried previously to put DD in her crib and she wakes up within 10 minutes and screams. I don't know if it is because she is flat on her back or if she needs the rocking from the swing. The swing's batteries died again last night and she stayed asleep for at least an hour so who knows.
Any ideas? Should I start by turning the swing off? Should I just put her in her crib on the reflux pillow or should I prop the mattress up for her?
TIA!!

Re: Spinoff to Nap Nanny Posts-Baby sleeping in swing with reflux-how doI break this habit?
We had to take Lucas out of the swing at 5 weeks old because he had torticollis. He was addicted to it and spent so much time in the swing.
I think that the transition to the crib is what started me rocking him to sleep...he wanted the motion. I would rock him and when he was out I would put him in the crib and sort of hover over him with my hands still on him while he settled in.
It took quite a while to get him to sleep comfortably without the swing and on top of it the poor kid never had a pacifier to help him self-soothe We did a lot of rocking, walking and singing but eventually he found comfort and slept well...today he is the best sleeper!

How long did it take to transition him Ang?
We went cold turkey..poor kid has always had to deal with that but he does well with it.
The day we decided no more swing we just packed it up and put it away so that we wouldn't cave. We knew it was going to be rough for a while so we just teamed up and dealt with him however we could...that's how we started rocking. I have never moved so fast on a chair before We held him tight and kept his arms down (like the swaddle does for them) and made sure to time his feeding with sleep so that he would have a full belly and get the sucking from the nipple to soothe him.
Overall it took about a week or two for him to get into this new routine...we also introduced the bath every night. We fell into a routine that seemed to help him...by week 2 he knew that bath meant bottle and bed and he seemed to follow it well. It was hard at first but we were determined to make it work...so we stuck it out...cried a lot...and eventually it worked out. He never went back in the swing again...I wouldn't even let daycare put him in.
This past week I decided to take Gregory off the pacifier. He was so dependent on it but the problem is that with daycare starting next week I don't want him to have it there. I also don't want to make it their problem to deal with him going through withdrawal so I started now. He's on day 4 and I swear he has forgotten he ever used one. When they are this small it's so much easier to change things on them. We just substitute with walking, shhhhing and singing. It helps to be doing this the second time around because I understand how to deal with him better than I did Lucas. That's why I always say that Lucas taught me how to be a mom.
[sorry so long!]

Re: Spinoff to Nap Nanny Posts-Baby sleeping in swing with reflux-how doI break this habit?
I started with turning the swing off once she was asleep, and by about 17wks she no longer wnated to be in her swing much. As she gets older she needs more stimulation and now her bouncer, but more so her jumper baby einstein are her favs and on only rare ocassions she goes into her swing. I know it seems hopeless now, but she may wean herself. Emmy did and now all naps are in her crib. I let her decided and it was easier that way, but she's a mellow baby and her sched. is pretty loose and she does what she wants since that what works for us. I will say her own sched is pretty strict, but she does it not me ;)
