Spinoff to parking in a handicapped spot...
Curious what you guys think of this one - my mom has a dear friend who is legally blind in one eye. She is allowed to drive and has a license, she also qualified for, and has, a handicap pass. I don't think she even parks in the spots, but this always made me She's disabled enough that she qualified for a pass, but her disability is her eyesight and she's allowed to drive?? KWIM?
Always wondered about that one...

huh, thats surprising that she even has a license. the pass doesn't bother me, more the fact that she still drives.

My DD is legally blind in her left eye and she has a valid drivers liscence and NO handicap parking pass. She doesn't need one

But that's my point - if she needs a pass because she' blind in one eye, she shouldn't be driving!!! If her eyesight is good enough to drive, then I don't think it's a handicapping condition!

Legally blind in one eye isn't the same as blind in one eye. Someone who is legally blind in one eye CAN still see out of that eye, just not very well.
I'm not saying that I would drive, or I wouldn't drive. I do know some people who are legally blind in one eye and happen to be better drivers than some people with 20/20 vision that I know

I have to agree with that.
What about her eye makes it difficult to park further away??

They will give a license to ANYONE. I know someone who wears prosthetic arms and is in a wheelchair who had a license.
My uncle is almost completely blind in one eye and has awful vision in the other. He originally got his driver's license when he lived in Canada where they don't give eye exams before issuing a license. He's been in more car accidents than I can count.

My DD had to go thru extensive testing before they would give her her liscence. She wasn't just given it!

Re: Spinoff to parking in a handicapped spot...
I see your point but I would rather have someone who was legally blind park in a handicapped spot than get hit in a parking lot because they didn't see a car coming.

Re: Spinoff to parking in a handicapped spot...
she doesnt deserve a handicapped spot, imo.
handicapped spots should be for people who really need them - handicapped children, spouses that are handicapped.
if she can drive with one eye, she can walk from the back of the parking lot.

Re: Spinoff to parking in a handicapped spot...
Do you know what caused the loss of vision in the eye? I ask because I am currently losing my vision in my left eye and will probably be declared legally blind when I go to my cornea speacialist tomorrow. Anyway, I receive disability and COULD get a parking permit but it's not just my eye that qualifies me...It's the cancer. I guess I just want to say unless you know someone's full medicial history don't be so quick, it might be more than just an eye.
Now, if you DO know the medical history and the pass was given for the eye than I don't agree with that. I feel that the pass should go to people who reallllly could use parking closer.

Re: Spinoff to parking in a handicapped spot...
Side topic- What is your definition of handicapped? I am reading that a lot of people are saying if they can drive they don't need the pass. Well EVERYONE who has the pass qualifies drives...I don't understand the rationale? Should everyone who is declared handicapped NOT be able to drive?
