Spinoff to reading..

How do you know what level your child is reading at? All I know is that he is reading in group C. Did your teacher tell you?

Re: Spinoff to reading..

My daughter's teacher told me at the parent teacher conference that at that point she was past a D level, which was the highest they would go in class. But about a month later she sent chapter books home with my daughter with a note to look for J level books. This was not the case for my son. But each child is different and develops at their own pace. The reading groups are not differentiated in kindergarten at my kids school.

Re: Spinoff to reading..

I ask the teacher. By this point in the year, even in K, your child should have been levelled with a running record. The group doesn't necessarily mean anything. Just ask the teacher.

You can ask the teacher but in our district they cap at a certain level. If you are under that your teacher can tell you but if they are at the cap you won't necessarily know as they stop testing at the cap in my school.

Is this just in kindergarten or in every grade level that they have a cap? Also do u mean at the end of the year they don't test a child past a D? So they have no idea where they are reading above that?

Re: Spinoff to reading..

If he is in group C then he is probably reading in C. In nyc /my school we consider c on grade level but seems to be pushing more towards D on grade level in june.

We level pur students year round. Typically around report card time, but pretty much when ever we think a child is ready to move. We dont realy cap but if a kid was in B and is suddenly reading and could level at G (for jnstance) We dont just move them to G because that is a lot of levels to skip. I probably wouldnt put a kid past I in kingergarten.

I teach kindergarten. I have students reading from B to I level. Most are c-f those who are g-i were reading already when they entered my class.

Eta our books are marked with the letter level so parents should know what level thry are on by looking St their books

We were never told what reading level my son was at. I had to ask his teacher.

I didn't even know the "letters" were a universal thing. Is there anywhere to look up the meaning of the letters? What skills he is good at and what he needs to work on for each group?
He brings home C books and I know that Pre-ADHD diagnosis she mentioned that some days he is a C and others he can barely attend to read anything. Now that we have a handle on the ADHD his reading is soaring. But, I can't see her switching his reading group so late. Or maybe this is just what a June C looks like. But, I know he is more consistent. At least during the day time. Night time is more distractible and I still see the wavering.
