Spinoff to sailing accident

When do you think it's safe to have your DC on a boat? We have a 17 ft Boston Whaler (fishing boat - no cabin) and DH is dying for the day he can take Ryan out. I say it'll be MANY, MANY years - like when he's 7, 8, 9 yrs old maybe.

Where do they go out? Ocean water or inlets?

They go in an inlet & lake that is pretty calm for the most part. I should have stated that. In the ocean I wouldn't let him.

We sailed all over the Sound as kids. Martha's Vineyard, Greenport, etc. My parents had us on a boat at 6 months old. Our boat had a cabin though.

I would be ok with my kids on our little Boston Whaler to tool around the harbor, etc.

Re: Spinoff to sailing accident

I could potentially deal with quiet waters younger than 7, but I feel like south shore LI waters get choppy and dangerous. I get nervous for myself - nevermind for my child!

We have a 13 ft Boston Whaler - that is and will be sitting on cinder blocks in our side yard for many years, because I will not let my DH take even our oldest out on it yet (he is only 4 and can't swim).

But, my IL's have a 36' Trojan that we take the kids out on every summer. We do make them stay in the lower cabin, and the trip is usually only from Patchogue over to Davis Park on Fire Island and back again.

DD went on a boat for the first time last month at 9 months old in the Great South Bay. She has a life preserver and someone was always holding her.

I think its when you feel comfortable with the idea of your child being on the boat is the best age. Accidents happen and no matter the age. Just like most things we just gotta make sure we are aware of the dangers and do what we think is best for them.

Re: Spinoff to sailing accident

I think a real boat is fine at any age, as long as the children are being watched carefully.

But, something like a hobie cat? I wouldn't allow my child on that until they were much older, and I knew they could swim and know how to stay afloat.

We have a 22ft cuddy Cabin

DS has been on it since he was 1 and 1/2 and DD since birth.

When DH goes out fishing DS is allowed to go at 3 they go way out in the Gulf (not on our boat but a larger Grady White) but all involved know to bring the boat back if its rough. And honestly he is out there with a bunch of special operations search and rescue guys I trust their judgement.

Honestly though why the heck would the kid be on a hobie cat without a parent!!!!!
