spinoff to square footage
Those of you who have 3,000+ square feet - How many are in your family? Do you use all of your house often, or are there certain rooms that are more for "show," or when you have guests/holidays, etc?

Re: spinoff to square footage
I have not moved into my house yet, it should be finished in November, however, I imagine that we will not use the living room and dining room that often. At least not now. We have 2 kids, 8 months and 2 yrs old. I think when they get older ( a lot older) and have friends over my husband and I will probably get more use of the living room. I see us using the rest of the house though. Especially the family room/kitchen area and study as I work from home 3 days a week. I do think that the floorplan has some wasted space that we really didn't need. The master bedroom has a huge sitting area and HUGE closet. While both are nice I don't think necessary, the space could have been used for something more useful. We'll see. We are excited though!

Re: spinoff to square footage
We're going to wind up with around 2,700 sf for two adults and two kids. One bedroom will be a library, just for books and a desk or two for studying and homework. Another room is a toy/play room. Another room is for the computers/office. We're not really going to have any "extra" space. Each DC will have their own bedroom, and their own bathroom. We might not "need" that much, but I think it will make things easier. Especially with two teenagers eventually! DD can spend two hours fixing her hair, and DS can take an hour shower, and I can still go to the bathroom....
Plus, with an expanded basement, I'll be able to get more tools, and spread out the ones I have.

Re: spinoff to square footage
I grew into my home (4200 sf, 6 bedrooms). I have a husband and two kids and for many years whole areas of my home were never used. Now I use it all and enjoy it all. When I first moved in, I couldn't imagine using all the space, but now I love it.

Re: spinoff to square footage
We are looking at 3,000 + Sq feet for our house. It is just the two of us now, hopefully more to come. Not all of the rooms will be in use. Im sure the Living room will be just for show and the extra rooms, well more bang for the buck if we sell, also it will be great guest rooms since we will be moving out of state.

Re: spinoff to square footage
My home is over 5000sq.ft. and we generally use all the rooms in the house. It is myself, my DH and 3yr. daughter. We are expecting another, however since we live out of state we get a lot of visitors so having the extra guest bedrooms is a huge plus for us. the only room that doesn't get much use unless we have more than 10 people over at a time is the diningroom. Other than that i have to clean it all

Re: spinoff to square footage
We just moved out of our 3000+ sq/ft house (in another state). We are moving to a smaller house in LI (about 2300? not really sure).
But in all honesty there are 3 of us (me, DH and DD) and we really only used the family room, kitchen, breakfast nook and bedrooms. We had a livingroom, den/library, diningroom and 2 bedrooms that we rarely used.

Re: spinoff to square footage
We are in the process of our construction project, when finished we should have around 3800 sq feet on the 1st and 2nd floors.
Full finished basement with around 1500 sq ft and attic with 12 foot ceilings for storage.
its just going to be the 2 of us for a while! but we have 3 extra bedrooms and hten our master suite

Re: spinoff to square footage
We use all the rooms. Had 4 bedrooms made one room big bathroom with washer/dryer. I have a new refinished basement with our office. The kiids are always down there now. We also have a huge walk up attic. Now that the basement is finished and the kids are alittle older we are making that our master so the kids can all have there own room.

We have not moved in yet - construction is STILL on-going but it's just the 2 of us and will be for a while.
I'm sure we will have family visit often.
My dad has about 2200 sq ft with the master on the first floor. It's just him and his wife. There are two bedrooms upstairs and a shared bathroom. He goes upstairs probably twice a year And before he met his now wife, he probably had not been up there in months. The most use those rooms get is when DH and I visit and when they have over night guests.
They also do not use the den much since there is a t.v. in their bedroom.

Re: spinoff to square footage
our house is close to 3000 with the finished room in the basement(2/3 still unfinished). We use everyroom but I wish we bought a smaller house sometimes. Its me & DH and our two kids but they are not home all the time & I often feel like its wasteful to have such a big house, plus its a PITA to keep clean. We do host all of the holidays & its awesome for that & having overnights guests as we often do. My townhouse was less than 1/2 the size & I sometimes feel like I was more organized & utilized space better.
ETA-we don't have any "formal" rooms.
