Spinoff to Stephanie's post - re: eating too much?
OK - I know everyone here says a baby will never over eat, you can never over feed a baby, etc...
at what point do you have to monitor what your child is eating if you feel he/she is eating too much? When is it baby fat and when is it, well, just fat?
the reason I'm asking is that there area lot of overweight people in my family. My neices and nephews were always heavy, and when they were young, it was baby fat - but now they are 8 and 11, and its really bad...
I want to add that even with my stepdaughters, we do not have junk in the house. On the weekends DH will occasionally buy a bag of chips or we will make cookies, so its not an endless amount of junk....
I'm not talking about snacking on junk. I'm talking about always wanting to eat, and eating large portions of regular food... This is what my neice and nephew always does, and I really don't want Cailen to ever have to struggle with his weight....

I come from a large italian family-large in both kinds of ways.
I am no expert but i would say after age 3 is when you can start really saying no you had enough and i wouldn't do unless there was a weight issue and under the advice of a PED. That's just what i would do if it were an issue. But i would never deny my children anything healthy for them-i wouldn't care if they ate their 80th carrot and 4th apple for the day. it's junk food, refined foods, and fast food that are making EVERYONE including children fat.
Does that make any sense?
I have some HUGE cousins, they were always on the large side cause of junk food and lack of portion control. My aunt always rewarded them with food too. good job riding your bike, here's a whole chocolate cake kinda thing. And they would eat 1/2 the cake. They didn't get really heavy for their age until they all turned 3-4-5 years old.
I do believe though that kids learn eating habits and are taught their relationship with food from their parents mostly.
portion control is key, but I think very inappropriate for a normal growing/gaining thriving baby especially def under the age of 1, and possibly age 2.
JMHO
ETA: Also, kids are much less active nowadays then we were as kids. too much food and no exercise is not a good combo either. My MIL is a preschool/kindergarden teacher and it's sad when it's playtime and their outside, she tells them to go play, and they ask her "Play what?" "What do we do?".

ITA - I don't even think I will have to worry because we don't really focus so much on food as it is, and we are a very active family... but still, he does have my family's genes floating around....

I can totally relate!, my genes are there too to be big. I blame my thighs and butt on my mom's family But being predisposed and actually letting happen I think are two totally different things. We came from a large family and never once was my brother and I overweight nor my cousins on my moms side. Thank goodness, that part of the family changed their "clean your whole plate" mentality when they had kids.
I try everyday to not let those genes take over, they're just waiting in the wings. My mom wants to kill me when i eat just 1 oreo or a very small bowl of ice cream or just a couple chips. She wishes she had my will power.
