They often get eye infections earlier than that.

Yes, but sunscreen is better than having DC exposed to the sun without it.
DS had sunscreen on by 6-8 weeks of age.

That is exactly my thinking! Especially out here in the Vegas sun - I did buy her a floatie with a sunshade, but I know that the sun reflects under the water too... so I didn't want to leave her unprotected!

I agree - when we went camping at the folk fest last summer, Cailen was almost 4 mts old and trust me - I slathered him in sunscreen several times a day!!!

Before 6 months of age they cant regulate their body temperatures. If you slather them with sunscreen you are basically insulating them which can cause overheating because they can not sweat. Sunscreen is ok as long as it's used only when needed, on essential areas (cheeks, nose). Wide brimmed hats and shade are best

I heard similar to what kptoys said. With my first I had asked my ped and she said shade and alternate sun protection (hats, sun shades, avoid high sun etc) is best but if you are going to be in the sun for prolonged periods of time to use sunblock and I did before 6 months. I just used it in moderation.

DS had sunscreen on by 6-8 weeks of age. Same here. He has very light skin like me. At 6 weeks he was in full sun screen, hat, umbrella, the works.

Same for both girls for us. Shade is best but sometimes that's just not possible and PED agreed, rather be safe than have a little baby with sunburn. My PED ok's suncreen and bug spray for under 6 months old.

Re: spinoff to sunscreen post... why at 6 mos of age???
I asked my pedi about the 6 month rule last week. He told me it was nothing to be concerned with and that after a few weeks the baby could use sunscreen. He said to make sure it was PAB and something else free was all. We are going to FL in two weeks (DS will be short of 6 months by a week) and I have sunscreen, a float with a awning on it, a hat, those tops that are SPF blockers.

Re: spinoff to sunscreen post... why at 6 mos of age???
I was told it could cause I infections. My doc told me not to worry too much about it, just try to keep screen off her face and use a hat. As far as insulating her body, I was told that had more to do with wet clothes than sunscreen.
My friends baby got an eye infection at 4 months and she was told it was from sunscreen.
Who knows.
