Spinoff to :Thanks MSN; Do you think
Do you think that the media is so quick to be the first to break a story that the knowingly report it without verifying facts? Good or not good? Discuss.

Absolutely. They've got to be the first, and especialy with something sensational like a screwdriver on a plane (which wouldn;t have been sensational 5 years ago ), they want to get it out as soon as possible and don't even cite sources.
I think with news online the standards are lower and lower for responsible journalism.

In today's "instant gratification" world I think news casters are constantly looking t "trump" each other and therefore will report anything without vereyifing facts first in orer not to be outdone! It's a shame.

Re: Spinoff to :Thanks MSN; Do you think
Absolutely, and its not good.
Since the news in this country is a business, just like any other business, they have to deliver a product. What the media industried end up doing is sensationalizing the news. That's why stories about celebrity gossip and "juicy" murders and mobs get front pages when the more mundane news (war, famine, etc...) get ignored or put to the back of the paper. When was the last time the newspapers or newshows had a front page or leading story about Dafur or AIDS in Africa? Genocide is going on right on our watch but we are more interested in Gotti's re-trial. (sorry off my soap box now)
It is inevitable that in a system like this, someone will jump the gun and run with a story before it is accurately researched.

When the real story comes out it will probably be she was drunk from too many screwdrivers and was misusing vaseline on some guy named Al

Didn't they do that with the mine incident (reporting that there were several survivors when only 1 person was alive)? While it's great to know more details as soon as possible, especially with high profile stories, I'd rather they wait a little longer and get the facts correct the first time.

Yes - they continually do this and it seems it has just gotten worse instead of them learning from their mistakes & embarassments. (Um, was not fun waking up in the middle of the morning while in Germany hearing that Gore won in 2000...only to wake up a few hours later to the "oops, our bad" )
NO, it's not a good thing at all - it's shameful.

Yes, the did this as well with 9-11. I remember one of the early morning reports saying the tolls were up over 10,000. It was horrible.
I think that if there is a problem that could potentially save lives, but is still in developmental stage, then it might benefit some to post a new story in the early stages, as long as it remains truthful. I hate when newspeople *fill in the blanks* to make something more attractive to viewers

Yes I do. The media needs to get their fact straight before reporting anything, especally stuff regarding terrorism.
