Spinoff to the only child posts....

For those that want only one child, what is the reasoning behind it? There are times i feel i only want one and my reason is because I dont know if i can handle the newborn stage again (the gas, not sleeping, etc.). I also had PPD. Not extreme, but when i look back at how I felt to how i feel now, it scares me.

But, then i stop and think that im being selfish and consider otherwise. I feel that Paige would want to have a sibling.

I really think if parents want only one child and know their limitations, they should stop with one. It doesn't make you a bad parent or selfish at all.

That said, my main reason for only having one is age. I am 40 now, and the risk of birth defects is higher. I don't feel so comfortable taking that chance--not putting down 40+ moms, this is JMO. Also, we would need to conceive very soon, and I really don't feel up to a toddler and a newborn--I just don't think I would have the energy and be a good parent to both.

I don't think anyone should have to justify or explain the reasoning behind wanting only 1 child, 2, 3 or even not wanting any.

Many reasons:

- age
- finance
- space at home
- genetic disorder
- juggling work and family
- Parents not on the same page on wanting another child
etc..

Best reason of all: They just want 1 child.
