Spinoff to those who said they know a published author...
(a spin off of my own post)
now, in your experience, did they become wealthy after being published?

I didn't answer the other post, but my friend's father has published 6 or 7 books (murder-mystery stories) and he is not wealthy by any means.

I think that's a myth...like all people on TV are rich
in reality it's just not the case

I posted on the other thread, but will post here too.
I worked for Penguin for five years. I handled a lot of contracts and author payments (among other duties). I KNOW they don't get paid. The real money actually comes from different subsidiary rights deals. The royalties is where they make the nice money (translations into various languages, movie rights, audio rights).

Not. At. All. The authors I know are professors though--they write books for their careers, not for the money. It's not their main profession.

No, I don't believe so. I don't delve into her personal finances but I know she did well for herself. I wouldn't say wealthy. She is a SAHM now & still writes.
I think it was more of a huge personal accomplishment. Although her book was made into a Showtime movie.

I think it's the rare few who get rich from it. Not everyone will get $1 million on their first book like Nicholas Sparks.

I work for Penguin now! in book production. but yes..aside for the big shots like Cornwell, Clancy, etc. the real money are those other contracts and rights deals.

In my case it is people who work in my field of law. They still practice law. They are among the higher paid in my field but they're not retired to that island in the Caribbean just yet. The books come with jobs such as updates and speaking engagements.

An old publishing friend works for him She is the one he sent to England one weekend to pick up revisions of one of the HP books. Walked into the office one day and was told to go home, get her passport and clothes for the weekend. It needed to be picked up in person and never leave her person

Re: Spinoff to those who said they know a published author...
My colleague just published her first book. She has no plans to retire, but I do think she makes a nice penny now that she has been asked to speak at conferences all over the world as an expert.
She is starting her second book, but I still don't think she would retire even if she did make a lot.

Re: Spinoff to those who said they know a published author...
No, not at all.
My husband's first book was "self-published" through a non-profit, so all the proceeds went to the non-profit. The book sold well and did benefit the organization.
His second book was through an established publisher. The first year he did well (about $800), but since then it has gone down. If he makes about $400 a year from sales, he is lucky.
