Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I saw that some posted that they had their children at Huntington Hospital, which is where I will be having my little one.....
I thought it will be helpful for those that had their children at different hospitals to post their experiences about it...service...staff...the rooms etc and any tips that might be helpful to us that will be going through this....

I had both my other children at North Shore Manhassett and had 2 GREAT experiences.
The staff is wonderful there. Both times I felt like I was the only woman giving birth because they were all so attentive to me.
Im gonna be having my 3rd there too.

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I had a great experience at Winthrop. The L&D rooms are beautiful and new-looking. The maternity rooms on the other hand, are small, old and "hospital-like". Get a private room if possible, I did and it was worth every single penny!!!

The nurses (both L&D and maternity) were WONDERFUL. I didn't have a single complaint about any of them. I remember one night after DH left, I dropped the TV remote control. Two days after a C-sec, there was no way I could get out of bed and bend over for it, so I had to buzz a nurse. I felt so stupid buzzing a nurse just to *hand me the remote control*, but she was so sweet about it.

The food is just so-so. The chicken caesar salad and the penne ala vodka were good for "hospital food". The london broil was gross. The breakfasts were beyond gross, stick to cold cereal or have your DH bring a donut. The desserts were the best part of the food experience-- cheesecake, german choc cake, etc. I'd have dessert with lunch and dinner every day!!!

I delivered at St Catherines and had no problems at all. They have no private rooms though and you can be up to 4 girls in a room. Luckily I just had one across from me. The one drawback is that there is a main shower and you have to walk down the hall to use it. I took my husband with me to help me. All the staff was exremely kind and helpful. All in all a great experience!!

I delivered at Winthrop. The L&D rooms are really nice - my only complaint is that they really had no where for Dh to sleep (3 day induction here). The L&D nurses were really, really great (especially our very own Disneygrl, who did my IV Chat Icon ). Being that I was in L&D for about 3 days, I think I'm a pretty good judge Chat Icon. The Drs are all residents, I believe, just something to know.

The Maternity ward is OK. Just your typical small hospital room where you share with one other person. But the nurses there were great too. The food was pretty decent.

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I delivered at Mercy Medical Center and it was very bad. My L&D nurse was horrible, she was a nun and didnt help me at all during labor. She was too busy with "paperwork". My MIL and DH did all the work. My Dr. was rude, unprofessional and downright nasty. I have since reported her to a few different people, including my insurance company and the head of obstetrics at the hospital as well as wrote her a personal letter. As far as the nurse went I reported her to the head of nursing in the L&D dept. I have gotten phone calls all around apologizing for the horrificness (is that even a word?) of my experience there from start to finish. (EXCEPT THE DR. SHE MADE NO ATTEMPTS TO CONTACT ME AND WOULD NOT RETURN ANY CALLS I MADE TO HER OFFICE) To make matters worse, I was an employee there and to get the treatment I did was dispicable. I have to say the nurses on maternity were much nicer and more helpful, but L&D was a nightmare. (I did get a private room b/c i was an employee, but I would have rather had a more compentent dr and delivery staff) It is an experience that I am glad is over. Unfortunately a day that should have been the happiest (it was my bday too) was very much ruined and that will stay with me forever. Sorry to be such a debbie downer. I do hope my experience was an isolated incident. I had heard good things from people i knew who delivered there.

I had a c-section at North shore manhasset and I drove from Monroe (Orange County) to go there. OMG! I had THE BEST experience and for baby #2 we are going to make all the trips to LI again. NSUH is not a brand new L & D facility BUT the staff is AMAZING!!! Three days after having a c-section I was walking, taking a shower and pretty ready to go home. I did stay the full 4 nights/5 days because I wanted to make sure I was fully healed. The LC's, nurses and L & D staff were the best ever. I have had some horrible experiences at hospitals (with my mom's illnesses) and NSUH by far was THE BEST. I Loved my doctor (Dr. David Bergman part of Women's Health Professionals in Great Neck and Woodbury) and I would do it all over again in a nanosecond! The drives down to LI were SOOOOOOOOOO worth it in order to deliver at a fantastic hospital with an incredible doctor! Good Luck!

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I deilvered my son at Stony Brook....and I am so happy that we made the decision to do so, because James was born super early and needed the top notch NICU.

I had wonderful care....and everyone was so warm towards me and DH....I even heard a nurse yelling at the cleaning person who was complaining that I had to many visitors in my room....the Nurse told her...when you have a baby 15 wks early you can have all the visitors you want...because you will need the support.

The morning that I was checking out of the hospital I had a nervous breakdown, because I knew I had to leave my baby there....the nurse came in and sat with me for 45 minutes...until my mom got there.

Aw thanks Chat Icon I agree with you about the no place for husbands/coaches to sleep/relax. Once upon a time we did have lounge chairs but one by one the slowly disappered and were supposed to be replaced with recliners like they have in pediatric units but its been well over a year and still nothing. Occasionally we have xtra stretchers to spare if it is not too busy but for the most part if you are being induced at Winthrop tell your DH's to pack a sleeping bag!

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I delivered at Southside. The staff was incredibly friendly and I had a wonderful experience. One word of advice, regardless of where you deliver, if you enjoy your privacy, find out about getting your own room. I had to pay extra for mine, but it was SO worth it. I started out next to a woman that showed her delivery video to every single visitor (she had a LOT of visitors too), she and her guests were loud and inconsiderate, and she had children visiting that kept opening my curtain while I was trying to BF. Once DH found out that his Grandfather passed away, we knew we'd need the peace and quiet and privacy and immediately changed rooms. I'm going to get a private room from the beginning this time around.

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I delivered both my babies at Winthrop, exactly 2 years apart.

My first was a c/s and that went well. I had a private room for my 4 day stay and it was money very well spent! I was on a liquid diet, so I couldn't comment about the food, LOL!

More recently, I had a VBAC experience and it was a great experience. The nurses were great in both L&D and postpartum. I will say though that at 3 a.m. one nurse was rude. She dropped off my daughter to be BF and said "ring the bell when your done and someone will come and get her." So I did. Well, when she came to get her, she told me since I wasn't a c/s patient and could get up and down, I should have taken her to the nursery myself. OK! Whatever.

My stay for the VBAC was good in a sense that I was there only 2 days and I didn't request a private room, but didn't have a roommate my whole stay, so that was a great added bonus.

And yes, in L&D, I was there for only 6 hours, but I arrived at 4 a.m. after neither of us slept, and while I was waiting to get to 10 cm.,
poor DH had to sit on a chair that didn't even have arms to it, so he was so unconfy the whole time. Thankfully it wasn't a longer L&D.

NSUH -it was great.

I went there three times during the month that I gave birth.

1st time-to visit my friend. She had a bed by the door and it was very crowded. All the rooms were full and so was the nursery. (try to request a window bed).

2nd time-pre-term labor pains (due to a UTI) it was empty! They said it was the quietest it has ever been.

3rd time -the real deal. I had a crazy nurse (it was funny though) that was screaming PUSH! My mom was afraid she was going to scare the baby. She even set up picture situations. "okay daddy take a picture of me now putting the hat on."

They told me I was getting a room with four beds in it and I was very upset. However I got the window bed and it was huge, and it never had more than two beds filled at a time.

I was very tired and I did not have time to sleep. Everytime I put the baby in the nursery they would wheel him back 10 minutes later and say it was full! They would take him at night though but everytime he woke up they would wheel him back in and say he is hungry.

My friend had also given birth there and she said that because it was so busy she had the baby in the room 24hrs a day with her.

If you want to rest insist that they take the baby to the nursery, the nurses can be a little pushy. Depends on how busy they are.

Re: Spinoff to What Hospital you are delivering.....

I had my first at Stonybrook. In L&D the first nurse I had was so so. She didn't help at all, I pushed for an hour with her there, she gave me no directions, didn't tell me how, nothing. Then the shift changed and I got the best nurse, I gave birth about half an hour later. In maternity the staff was mediocre at best. In NICU I had an absolutely HORRIBLE experience with one of the nurses. I reported her and I really hope she got fired.

I had my second at North Shore and it was wonderful from start to finish. In L&D I had a wonderful nurse, anything we needed she helped us with. In maternity they were great as well.

Dr. Marchbein Delivered my first

Yes. He is still very cute. Chat Icon I love his personality, great bedside manner and hilarious! He played U2 on his Ipod as Gracie was born, I loved it! DH used to say of course you had to pick the cute doctor. Chat Icon Seriously though, Bergman is a high risk doctor and with my heart condition, that is who I went to. He is so experienced with c-sections and when I had to have one, I was so thankful I made the trips to see him. Marchbein is hilarious as well. I love them both.
