Spinoff to Winnings from Super Bowl Pool Post...
So on a number of occasions in that thread I saw people mention tipping the person who ran the pool 10%.
Now I'm no stranger to gambling and have been in my fair share of pools but this is the first I've ever heard of this tip.
Am I the only one?

I'd never heard of it either and I don't like it.
I would've offered to buy the guy dinner or something- but 10% of a big pool is alot of $$$ for making some boxes and collecting money.
Next year, I'll do it!

I don't think it is "necessary" persay but I think it is standard practice. Like someone else said, when you win in Vegas, you tip the dealer, no?

I don't know if it's a standard practice for gambling across the board but I know when it comes to superbowl boxes it's def. the norm. There were a handful of pools that all different friends ran and 10% was a given.

Re: Spinoff to Winnings from Super Bowl Pool Post...
with the super bowl boxes.. its usually the 10% ..
BUT i also say it depends on the AMOUNT of the boxes..
like if you are doing $20 boxes.. i would tip for the final payout..
i would personally not give 10% if its under $20...

I did it when I won because the guy that runs the pool doesnt get any money for it...unlike a dealer in Vegas that is getting paid to deal me my cards.

Re: Spinoff to Winnings from Super Bowl Pool Post...
basically if you think about it.. running a pool with ALOT of money is not easy.. you have to hound some of the people for the money.. etc.. and keep it protected.. if you cant fill all the boxes you have to either cancel it.. or come up with other ways to fill it..
i just think the more serious the boxes are .. you should definitely tip 10%..
if its more of a fun pool.. then NO.. i dont think you need to..

But that's the dealers JOB. Most likely the person running the pool in their office has another job.. the one they are working in the office for
It takes little to no work to set up a grid, have people stop by, sign up give you $10 and then announce the winners.
It's ridiculous to think that person deserves 10%. You don't tip the scratch-off vendor when you cash in your scratch-offs.
How about fantasy football? Do you tip the guy that runs that league?

When we play for money, yes.
They have to deal with finding a draft time that works for EVERYONE and then deal with the crying about trades and points awarded by the system.
Being head of your league is not an easy job.

I don't get it though...no one is forcing anyone to run a superbowl pool or fantasy leagues. It's for fun. It really never occurred to me that any tipping was involved!

Re: Spinoff to Winnings from Super Bowl Pool Post...
my dad used to run many bets and such thru the years (kind of a part time bookie) and not once did he ever have someone "tip him" cause they won.
a lot of times the person who makes the pool is probably getting a little bit of the moolah anyway....people don't start betting pools just for the sheer enjoyment out of it...they DO make some money from it.

I've run 4 FF leagues and 2 Fbaseball leagues and it is NOT that hard.
No one has ever tipped me and I think I would have laughed at them if they did. We are all friends, tipping each other is just weird.
Do all of you guys tip whoever collects around the office for flowers for a funeral or baby? Now THAT'S alot of work.. collect money, buy gift, get gift to recipient, circulate a card....

Are your leagues competitive ones with prizes in the end?
Are they keeper leagues with waiting lists to get into?
Do you do the drafts in person?

Me too - a little something for the trouble of setting it up, collecting the money, etc. It's not required, but a little something for going to the trouble of running the pool.
