Spinoff...if you waited to start solids..5 mo +

We got the go-ahead but DD is doing wonderful on bm & gaining weight & drinking 7 oz. ever 3-4 hrs & sleeping through the night (just about all the time). YET we're going to start solids in the next couple of weeks.

I wanted to know if you decided to wait, WHAT type of schedule did you follow? What did you introduce? Did you still start w/ cereal? Then how long after do you switch to veggies/fruits?

Did any of you go from cereal to table food & avoid baby food altogether?

How does it work?

Thanks.

i started DS at 5 months, he is drinking 5 1/2-6 oz every 3-4 hours and eats baby food for breakfast and dinner.
We started with rice cereal, then oatmeal, and then fruits- my doctor reccomended feeding the same item for 3-4 days before switching and introducing a new food
so far with babyfood, we have done applesauce and we are on bananas. I stopped cereal altogether right now and i only give the fruit, per my doctors orders-they felt that the DS was on the bigger side so they told us to eliminate the cereal as its fattening. Once i can give him more then one item per feeding i may go back to rice, as DS really likes it. We give b/t 1-2 tablespoons of baby food per feeding

Almost exactly the same thing here. Only DS HATES the cereal. So we only use it as a mix in.

Basically what I have done with all my kids is I start with cereal..for me its always been rice...mixed to basically the consistancy of Motts Applesauce. At first I am just trying to get them used to the solids. They need to get that tongue action down pat. Some kids take about a week or so some (like DS) know what to do right away...then I move on to the other cereals. Barley, Oatmeal, and Mixed. I give each cereal 3/4 days to make sure there isnt any allegies. So all in all the "cereal stage" could take 3 weeks. Then I move on to fruits..giving each one 3/4 days..then on to vegetables...then meats...then dairy...then when the pediatrician gives the OK eggs....

i did rice and then oatmeal for 4 days each (it ended up being b/t 1 and 2 weeks altogether for cereal), and i am doing the same with fruits now. Some people also do Barley for cereal, but again i went to the doctor at the time i was giving DS oatmeal and he had told us to go right to fruits, so we never did Barley. Some people only do all three cereal types, some do just 2 like Rice and barley or barley and oatmeal, etc, you can mix and match to suit whatever works for you and your DC. During the cereal time, i learned that DS liked rice much better then oatmeal, so i know that down the road i will prob just give him that, if i go back to the cereal route.

Re: Spinoff...if you waited to start solids..5 mo +

I started solids at 6 months. I make my own baby food, so I started with sweet potatoes 1st - followed the 3 day rule. Then Butternut squash, then carrots. This was all at lunch.

Then I started oatmeal for breakfast. Then added in applesauce to the oatmeal. Then started playing around with combos for lunch (say, sweet potato, carrot, and apple)

Then green beans... and she had an avocado last night for dinner.

All still EBFing inbetween.

We started late here too.

I started out with the cereal in the evening. Stayed with that for about 2 weeks. Then I added the cereal at night.

2 weeks later I started with a small jar of fruit at night and in the morning. After staying on the same fruit for about 3 days (made sure there was no reaction) I would try something else. Took us about 2 weeks to get through them all. Then we started veggies. Did the same with the vegetables after that..not adding meats until like a month after that.
