ETA: I understand that a lot of it is about tracking, but if he's going to provide them the opportunity to get a license, then be fair and don't deport them for trying to work. Make their working conditions fair, safe and legal so that they then can pay taxes like everyone else and truly be on their way to becoming legal. I feel like it is kind of a tease or a "you'll be screwed in the end" kind of situation.

i don't know... sounds strange in this time of terrorism.....but like Spitzer said, DMV is not the INS. illegal immigrants will drive regardless of whether or not they have a license so perhaps this will reduce those driving without a license and insurance as you can't get auto insruance without a license.... and i would think this would make the roads safer for everyone and perhaps keep insurance rates lower.

IMO, 99% of the immigrants in this country are escaping intolerable conditions in their homelands and/or just trying to make a better life for themselves and are not the ones causing terrorism. many of those linked to terrorism are here LEGALLY...through work and student visas and other programs.

unlike popular belief, these people because they are still people still pay taxes with an identification tax payer id.

I think it's a good thing and I applaud Mr Spitzer for it.

yeah, some people abuse the system but other ones just want a chance like everyone else to be part of this country and have come for better opportunities, to reach the american dream.

well unfortunately, they have to become a legal resident first in order to become a citizen and the regulations and the expense that comes with that are too hard and it should be, but a lot of these people work and their earnings are only good to survive.


Yes... and the unfair way visas and green cards are distributed in this country make it increasingly difficult for immigrants that want to be legal become legal. We tell them to come here legally but we make it next to impossible for them to become legal residents.... yet, we give visas to terrorists... makes no sense to me.
