Split Pad
my dog was at the beach the other day (coindre). we go almost daily and he ALWAYS swims. when i went to rinse him off and noticed that he was holding his paw up and there was a good amount of blood. after rinsing his paw, i saw that one of his pads was sliced but the bleeding had stopped and he seemd fined (still running around and playing). i came home and cleaned it w/ hydrogen peroxide and wrapped a sock around the paw.
since it still looked pretty raw yesterday. i decided to take him to the vet. they cleaned the pad, bandaged the leg and gave me some antibotics. i have to go back again in 4 days so that they can re-wrap it.
i am hoping that the pad will heal and bond back together but the vet said since the slice was so deep it may never bond together again and that part of the split might just end up falling off.
since i do not have any expereince w/ this, was wondering if this has happened to anyone elses dog/cat.

Re: Split Pad
I have no experience with a split pad, but my Mini Pin, Hans, used to puncture his pad with his claws (he was an excessive scratcher). Sometimes the puncture would close, but sometime it did not. We had to clean it constantly with a q-tip.
Hope your pooch feels better

Re: Split Pad
That's happened to Gus...actually one time it happened at the beach at coindre-, but it also happened at the beach I live on in Sayville...I think it's the shells...they can't stitch the pad...so it's difficult...salt water really helps clean it out, and then I put neosporin on it I usually wait until he is sleeping and then it's a sneak attack to really get some on the cut...

i have NO idea how it happened. totally freak accident as there were several others dogs at the beach and nothing happened to them. i was thinking it might have been from broken glass (you know what it is like down there).
the vet was actually going to stitch it and said in order to do so she would have to put him under and then he would have to wear a cone. knowing how my dog reacts to certain things, i wasn't too happy w/ that option. so i asked what the other alternative was and opted for that. she told me to keep the bandage dry and only leash walk him for the next week. she is going to change the bandages when i go back on tues.
the worst part is, i have to keep him inactive for at least a week. don't think that he can really last that long. might have to break down and bring him to coindre in a few days.
hope all is well!!!!

Re: Split Pad
This has happened to Ebs a few times (surprise, surprise) and every time he has healed up with no problems.
Hope he is OK!
