Can you build up on a split?

Re: Splits
we have a split and hope to built up over our garages. We have a 2 car garage as well as a room that is the size of a garage next to them...so its like a 3 car garage that we would like to build up on.
Im not sure if you can see what I am talking about in this picture...but the area in the left of the pic is where we want to build up on
here is another pic that was taken during when the new driveway was going in

Re: Splits
Lisa - your home is beautiful and I see what you are talking about in terms of building up.
I was wondering more for a split like this:

Re: Splits
absolutely... We live in a split and one day we can build up. WE have a big attic that can be converted to a master suite...
A couple of the other homes have done this on our block.

Re: Splits
my parents have a split and the top floor walls were slanted. we took the garage and built up from there and unslanted the walls so we built a mother-daughter for my grandmother.
i dont have pics, but the house is huge now.

Re: Splits
We have a split and are debating about expanding. Ours is a front to back split so it's different than the photos on this thread. We're thinking of putting another floor over the entire house, including garage, which would be 2-3 bedrooms and two baths.
There are a lot of splits in my neighborhood and several have been expanded, and they're all different. It definitely can be done.
