Sportsman Kennel
Has anyone ever heard of Sportsman Kennel in Manorville / Riverhead area? I was told not to go there but that was by one person. I am looking for more opinions. Thank you.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
That one person is absolutely right. They are supplied by puppy mills, it's a terrible business but one that thrives because they tell all kinds of lies and people believe them.
What kind of breed are you looking for? We could probably help in finding you a reputable breeder, rescue or shelter to get a dog from.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
OK Thank you so much. We are looking for a cockpoo or a soft coated wheaton Terrier. DUe to expenses we would rather adopt rather than buy.
What about Jan'sCockapoo's in New Jeresey? I believe that it is breeder.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
Once you mentioned cockapoo, I realized that your username sounded familiar. I'm not going to go into why you should reconsider a designer breed because it was already discussed here, so it seems like you're determined to get one. If you're not going to adopt one from a shelter, since there is no such thing as a reputable designer breeder, I'm afraid I don't have any other advice for you there.
However, for Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, there's hope. I didn't find anything on Petfinder in our area, since it's not a popular breed. The closest rescue is in Missouri. But there is what looks like a reputable breeder right in Setauket. I say that because they breed, title, and show the dogs, which is a good sign. But you should learn how to identify a GOOD breeder, not a backyard breeder or mill, and check them out:

Re: Sportsman Kennel
Although I agree with not buying a "designer" breed, I did want to step in and say that cockapoos have been refining their breeding lines for decades, within the standards set forth by the AKC, and are very close to becoming AKC recognized, unlike many of the new "poo" mixes. If a cockapoo breeder claims to already have AKC status however, run...they are yanking your chain.
Having said that, I am a huge fan of a Wheaten. ;)

Re: Sportsman Kennel
Do you have a reputable resource where I can read more about that, especially that they're close to AKC recognition? I find myself saying it over and over, and if that's true, I wouldn't want to spread misinformation.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
Great article on CrossBreeds (including the Cockapoo) - Linky
And Sportsmans Kennels get their dogs from mills, so if you really want a quality dog go to the Wheaten breeder previously mentioned.
Or better yet, go to Petfinder, a shelter or a rescue....we have a gorgeous, loving Weimaraner that we got as a puppy, paid almost nothing for and rescued from an unhappy home.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
I do not have to do a rescue - I would go to a breeder IF I can one not too far. I do not HAVE TO have a cockapoo. I need a dog that is "hyoallergenic". Feel free to give me ideas. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Airedale Terrier however they are almost impossible to find.

So far the akc allows them into agility, obedience & rally... It looks as though there is currently a rule that states that no new breed or variation of an existing breed will be presented for AKC recognition if the two breeds creating the "mix" are already both AKC recognized breeds. It seems there is a lot of conflicting information out there. I actually just contacted the AKC directly and asked them if they could clarify if there is an intent for the AKC to recognize the Cockapoo, or if it is just enthusiasts that will not take no for an answer. It seems that Cockapoo enthusiasts have been trying to get recognition since the 1960s. I'll post back when I hear from them.
Also, any *breeder* that states they have AKC Cockapoos, or even CKC, I would not consider a responsible breeder.

My husband is allergic and we need a hypoallergenic dog also. Poodles are hypoallergenic. We just found a Poodle breeder in Port Washington.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. I had no idea they had been at it so long. Some breeds go so far back, they don't know how they originated, but they were all mixes at one point right?
Completely agree about claiming papers on mixed breeds, they will make things up or even doctor the same papers and give the same family history out to all their customers. How will anyone know the difference?
As far as hypoallergenic, I keep hearing how great Bichon Frise dogs are, even as recently as last weekend watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet. The compromise is their grooming, because they have hair that grows and requires routine cutting, just like ours does. They said every 6-8 weeks.

Re: Sportsman Kennel
Another breed that can be almost considered hypoallergenic are Kerry Blue terriers. My old co-worker had 2 sons with asthma and the kids were fine with that breed and I know they bought from a local breeder and they lived in Oceanside.
