square foot gardeners
we want to plant a square foot veg garden..any tips?
we are planning 2x4 untreated wood garden
i read online that, on the one hand you don't have dig up the grass, and on the othre hand you do...what do you recommend?

I didn't have much real grass in the area I started mine in, but according to the "master" Mel Bartholomew you don't need to remove the grass. If you are planning on growing carrots or anything else that needs depth you'll need to till the soil beneath the boxes. I've benn Square foot gardening for a few years now & I love it. Its so easy & the boxes look so pretty when everything grows in. I do a little companion gardening in the Square foot style, its awesome!

I put it over the dirt that used to be our veggie garden...I didn't line with garden fabric, but instead with brown grocery bags. I still got a number of weeds though.
So I would put it on grass as long as you put a liner down.
