SSRI's during Pregnancy?
Anyone stay on SSRI's during pregnancy? Which one? Did it help ward off PPD? I know it's now widely accepted to be safe. I just don't know anyone who has (and honestly most people aren't open about taking antideppressants in general). I only recently started taking Trintellix in June and it's made a world of difference. I had untreated (well other than talk therapy) depression since I had my DS who is now 4. I know I will need to stay on meds during pregnancy since I will be at high risk for PPD and honestly I feel better right now than I ever have. My other concern is that the drug I take is relatively new so there's not a lot of evidence on it during pregnancy. I'm hesitant to switch from something that has been helping me but would rather go on something that has more of a history, like zoloft or lexapro.

No experience personally but my friend stayed on prozac throughout her 2 pregnancies. No issues and she was ok. I think they lowered her dosage some but it worked well for her.

SSRI's during Pregnancy?
I’m on Zoloft. Wasn’t on it during my pregnancies but I started after my second. My dr said it was safe to be on it for nursing and even if I had another pregnancy. She has lots of patients who stay on it while pregnant.

Who’s prescribing? If you’re not seeing a reproductive psychiatrist, I would ask your prescriber to call the Postpartum Support International psychiatric consult line. Your doctor can consult with a reproductive psychiatrist, free of charge, to discuss your safest medication options.

It was hard enough to find a psychiatrist in general. And I didn't even care if they take my insurance, I go through out of network. I would love to find one who specializes in reproductive issues. Thank you for the resource.

Re: SSRI's during Pregnancy?
I did not stay on my Prozac during pregnancy. I was weaned off prior to getting pregnant by the recommendation of my doctor. Honestly, I wish I had looked into the option of continuing it throughout my pregnancy....I didn't even think that was an option. Not even 2 days after coming home from the hospital I spiraled into terrible post-pardum anxiety worse than I've ever experienced in my life. I have a history of panic attacks and anxiety but this was unlike anything I've ever known. I literally couldn't function like a human being and went right to my doctor and was put on a high dose of prozac combined with Xanax until I was able to get back to a normal state and stop the Xanax and wean down to my normal dose of Prozac.
Anyway....I tell you this not to scare you, but to say that if you think you should continue on your SSRI throughout your pregnancy, really talk to your doctor or find one who will work with you to safely continue it (or one that is safe) because post-pregnancy hormones are NO joke when you already have a history of depression or anxiety and it can hit you literally hours after you deliver. Looking back, I wish I had known how fast and how hard it could hit...I would have really spent more time to talk to my doctor about my options.

SSRI's during Pregnancy?
No experience but just wanted to say congrats and that I would not hesitate one bit to remain on the medication throughout your pregnancy. I think that maternal mental health is such an incredibly important and overlooked area and the impact it has on the mom and the rest of the family is huge.

Thank you for sharing your experience. When I consulted my Gyno she supported staying on drugs during pregnancy because I’ve already had one bout of postpartum depression and anxiety. I know I wouldn’t want to go through that again. Or put my family through that again.

Thanks for the support. It totally does affect the family. Just ask my husband lol. But in all seriousness I know I’m making the right decisions for myself and my family. Just seems tough because no one talks about it and there still is a stigma.

I posted above about my friend. For her first son she went off Zoloft for pregnancy bc she thought she was supposed to. For her daughter she went off and at about 9 weeks HAD to go back on, mainly from us, her friends urging. Her personally changed and we are all so close and great friends and we’d tease her like omg please go back on your meds! And she did. We still joke about it and that was like 6-7 years ago. She was so mean to us and had a really hard time. It was so much better when her doc found a way for her to stay on it. Pregnancy is hard enough!!!
