St. Anthony's High School
Does St. Anthony's have a better academic reputation, than, say, an above-average public high school? Will a B student from St. Anthony's have a better chance of getting into a selective college than a B student, from, say, Northport High School?
ETA: all else being equal - same letters of rec, same GPA, same extra-curric. activities.

if they apply to a Catholic college, they may have an edge. Other than that i think that most colleges look at grades and SATs, from where they got them from is extraneous

Re: St. Anthony's High School
That's my thinking too.
My little brother is a B student at St. Anthony's, and IMO there is no "safety school" in the list of colleges he is applying to. He and my father are CONVINCED that his St. Anthony's B is like an A somewhere else. I said: It's not Stuyvesant!

honestly...
i think that colleges look at the grades, GPA and SAT scores regardless of where they came from, INCLUDING Stuyvesant.
Either you make the cut or you don't

Do selective colleges take more students from private schools - absolutely. But they don't mean "regular private religious schools" (and I don't mean that with any disrespect. The private schools they're talking about are places like Horace Mann, Choate, etc.
I'm a hs guidance counselor - if you want to tell me what your brother is interested in studying and what states he's interested in going to - I can give you an idea... I can also give you some advice on the list of schools he's thinking of.

Re: St. Anthony's High School
No offense at all! I think it's a nice place (St. Anthony's) but it's no academic powerhouse.
He's interested in broadcast journalism. He has an 85 average, and plays hockey. I forget what his PSATs were, but they were pretty good.
I was thinking a place like West Virginia University might be a safe bet. Or Marquette (Catholic).

He's a junior? Do you think the PSAT's were at least a 1500? (average score)

Re: St. Anthony's High School
Many colleges will also weight a GPA for honors and AP courses, so a B in an AP class will count as an A. You should check with the individual schools he is applying to, though. Some colleges do this and some don't.

Re: St. Anthony's High School
Broadcast Journ and hockey - where your bro can prob get in (or at least target for him)
Buffalo State Marist (bit tougher) Mercyhurst Quinnipiac New Paltz (toughest) Plattsburgh, Brockport, Fredonia - all target
Hope this helps!

Re: St. Anthony's High School
All else being equal (including standardized tests), I would say wouldn't matter. Without the same standardized test, I would say St Anthony's B average would rate better.
Also when I went to school, St. Anthony's was best known for having good looking guys.
