I was wondering if anyone can give me feedback on this island. Dh and I are looking to go in the fall. Any recommendations of which hotels to look into? We want a casino and one that is pretty close to good restaurants.

Any suggestions? Feedback about the island?

I prefer the Dutch side to the French. I was there twice. The casinos on the Dutch side were ok. We stayed at a timeshare called the Towers at Mullet Bay. We had a great time. Just be careful with your stuff if you go to Mullet Bay Beach. While I was there I saw two 15 year old boys steal someone's bag. Of course the New Yorker in me had to say something. They put the bag back but took it again as soon as we walked away. I'm sure every small island has crime, I just don't want to see it.

Try Cheri's Cafe in Maho Beach for dinner.

Definitely stay on the Dutch side...we booked a resort on the French side and called our TA to move us to the Dutch side. We originally booked a remote hotel, so everything closed at like 7 where we were on the French side.

This was one of my favorite islands beside St Thomas. I also agree to stay on the Dutch side. But definitely cross over. Do both.

Re: St. Maarten

My boss went last year and my friends just came back two weeks ago. They both stayed at the Westin and liked it a lot.

Do you know which Westin they stayed in? We were looking into the Westin St. Maarten, Dawn Beach. I wonder if it's the same one.

Anyone else have suggestions on good restaurants and whether or not early fall is too risky with hurricane season?

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: St. Maarten

It is by far my favorite island!! I prefer the French side, but the dutch side is also nice. We are always on a cruise when we go, so I can't tell you much about place to stay. I did however look at a flyer last time, that had tons of houses to rent. The prices weren't bad and the houses where amazing!! You wouldn't believe the views.
You must go to Orient bay beach!!

I'm not sure about early fall. That is still Hurricane season, and usually Sept, and Oct is pretty risky.

We were at Divi on the Dutch side. The beach was beautiful and the shopping was pretty good too! Everyone was very friendly, we almost went here on our honeymoon but chose Aruba because we hadn't been there before.

That's the one - there is only one Westin there.

Re: St. Maarten

The island is very americanized but the Dutch side is still much nicer and it has nicer beaches then the French side which is so poor.....best hotel on the island is the La Samanna Hotel http://www.lasamanna.com/web/omar/omar_a1a_splash.jsp which is great!!

I would also do a day trip to Anguilla or St Bart's (my favorite island) & great designer shopping from the Marigot port (French side)...totally worth it...

I was there on a cruise the week of October 10 & the weather was excellent! We did a lot of research on the weather, and that area is out of hurricane danger by that time of year. It did actuallky rain teh day we were in St. Martin, for about 3 minutes. It was actually really cool--it was like just one cloud was raing, you could walk across the street & be out of the rain.
