STAR Question
As of Friday, we will own two homes- one being a 2 family complete investment property and the other being a 1 family home.
I am the only named on the deed for the investment property and have not filed for STAR yet.
Dh and i are both going to be listed on the deed for the new one family.
Question- can i file for STAR exemption on the 2 family and have DH file for STAR exemption on the one family?
Please help, thanks!

Re: STAR Question
to file for STAR, the property has to be your primary residence. I don't know if there is a way of getting around that, maybe some other people know.

Re: STAR Question
I would call the town directly and ask them, so you fill out the correct paperwork.

this is right. in order to qualify for STAR it must be your primary residence. i own 2 houses out east that i cant get STAR on because i dont have any proof that i live there...ex.- a bill with your name/address on it, bank statement, etc....it sux!

Re: STAR Question
you can only have star on one property (your primary residence) - if you both are on all the paperwork, i dont think you can split it up, the application asks for all owners

Re: STAR Question
Recently someone was arrested in I believe suffolk for filing a star exemption on a home that was purely a rental and not a primary residence therefore I don't think it matters who is on the deed. I am sure there are plenty of people that get away with it but I wouldn't do it.

Re: STAR Question
ok thanks. it is not worth it to get arrested.. we'll take the star exemption on our primary residence.
