STAR Tax help
DH & I just bought our home in July. Do the STAR exemptions get automatically rolled over from the previous owners and then we reapply for the 08-09 year? Or do we apply now even though applications were due March 1st?

I would apply now and it won't take effect until Dec '08. We bought our house in april '06 and I filled the star application right away and got a post card saying that we would get it starting 07-08 but we did get the benefit of the star from the previous owner. I was nervous though when the bill came i didn't want to open it just in case we didn't get it.

If the owners applied to STAR before the March 1 deadline, you will have it reflected in your tax bill dated Dec '07 for the 2008 year.
If they didn't, and you live in the Town of Brookhaven (all towns have diff. deadlines), fill out the application now and if will take affect in your Dec. '08 bill for the 2009 year.

If the homeowners had the star exemptions, you get it for this , but you have to reapply in January
