Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I got so upset when they were going over tearing/cutting and big epidural needles that I started to cry. DH had to turn the DVD off because I was getting too upset. Natural delivery sounds so awful but c-sections seem even worse. I am such a huge wimp. I don't know how I am going to get through labor and delivery.
Any other wimpy mothers to be?

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
i watched a special on Gestational Diabetics giving birth (all 3 women profiled did NOT have to be medicated - so that gave me hope)....and they SHOWED a c-section and by SHOWED - i mean WOW...i was hysterical crying, almost to the point of hyperventilating. It was a mistake to watch that show without Dave there.... I did save it and show him when he got home....

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
Honestly from someone who BTDT, and tore.. its far worse thinking about it, then it actually happening. Yes it burns at the time and the healing process can suck, but overall your soo overwhelmed with joy of your new baby.. it doesnt even matter!!

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I don't think I will be able to watch any of those things. I honestly feel like the less I know about the whole process, the better I will be. I know that sounds so ignorant, but I feel like once I am there, there is no turning back anyway, and for me preparation will cause me to panick and dwell all the way until delivery. We'll see how it goes, but as of now, ignorance is bliss

I agree! I mean, I know there will be a certain level of discomfort (or just plain PAIN), but I'd almost rather wait and see how it is for me personally, as opposed to worrying too much about how it goes for others. I can see already that this experience really is different for every woman (despite some obvious commonalities) so I'm just going to see how it pans out!

You don't have a choice - He/She has to come out !!
I think the fear of it is more the fear and anxiety of the unknown .......KWIM?
Everyone that I talk to says it's NOT as bad as people make it out to be, or you work yourself up to be worried about -
Don't watch any more videos or read anymore if it upsets you -
The only thing you need to know is how to tell when you're in labor (and I'm sure it's not rocket science) and how to listen to your Dr. tell you what the F to do !!

Pain medications / epidurals are your friend
you will be fine. If it was THAT bad, women would not do it over and over
try not to stress over it

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I wouldn't worry about the epidural needle. I was in so much pain I was welcoming the needle if it was going to give me relief. I just let the anesthesiologist do his thing. As for tearing, I had a second degree tear, but I didn't even know it happened until my OB was stitching me up. Spraying dermoplast on it everytime I went to the bathroom was the best thing ever! Eventually the pain goes away, but you don't even focus on it because you'll be too busy tending to your little one

Me, I'm petrified! I refuse to watch/read anything that might scare me. I would prefer not to know. I'm such a wimp.

For real! It's making me wonder if it's worth it to take a childbirth class. Part of me worries I won't be mentally prepared enough for labor if I don't, but the other part of me thinks nature will just take over and I'll be fine being guided by the staff at the hospital when the time comes. Hmmm....

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
There is a fine line between being well-informed and freaked out. I got together with some friends this weekend who all have children and the first thing I said was "No horror stories please ladies". It's normal to be scared but we will all get through it.

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I was the opposite..I was obsessed with all those shows because I wanted to know everything & anything that could happen..I guess I like to torture myself.
But coming from someone who had 2 epidurals (the first one didnt work completely) and a spinal for the c-section after all that. it's really not that bad. They give you a local anesthetic shot first to numb the area..it pinches a little..and I didn't feel the epidural or the spinal.
As far as the c-section, I was so happy to have the pain stop and get the baby out after 14 hours of labor, I didn't even think twice about it. Recovery was fine..I went home a day early, and I am healing nicely. The first few days were a little slow moving, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be.
So don't worry...as bad as it may seem, once you have your baby in your arms, you'll forget all the worries...in the meantime, try not to worry yourself sick. Easy labor vibes to you

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I am a huge wimp. I would torture myself and watch the shows and then I would be sick over it.
As a BTDT when you are going through the motions and having your baby you just do it. Something in our body knows what needs to be done and it does the job. I ended up with a c-section and when I actually sit around and THINK about what they did to my body I freak the he!! out...but when I just think of the overrall procedure I really think it wasn't that bad and obviously I'm doing it again - so it really can't be that horrible!
It's normal to feel this way - all pregnant women do....it's the fear of the unknown that is the scariest thing about it!

Re: Started crying while watching the childbirth DVD
I am right there with you, girl! I took Childbirth Classes through Prohealth and the instructor was SO informative that I ended up leaving the class crying. It scared me to death. She brought in the instrument that breaks the water, the internal fetal monitor that attaches to the baby's head with a "pin prick" in case the external monitor is not enough, and went into intricate detail about what they do when you get an epidural. I wanted to scream "IT'S BEHIND ME, I DON"T NEED TO KNOW WHAT THE INSERTION ENTAILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
So now with only 7 days until my due date, those wonderful things are spinning around in my head :(
I think it's better to know less because there is no way to avoid the inevitable. Let's collectively breathe in and out and remember that our bodies were meant for this and not to think about what can happen :)
