Starting a new job but have a commitment on a certain day...
I'm able to start asap but there is one upcoming day that I committed myself to. How do you feel I should handle this should I let them know:
I can start right away but this day I committed myself to do blah blah or should I not look like I am asking for a day off already?

I think it's fine to let them know, even if you don't get paid for the hours off.
I started a new job in May of last year, and DS had several end of school activities going on.
My boss was okay with me taking the couple hours.

Chances are they'll be happy that you can start right away, even if you need 1 day off. Just be prepared to be docked pay for the day rather than them letting you borrow a vacation day since I doubt you'll have accrued any time off yet.

Starting a new job but have a commitment on a certain day...
Just let them know. I started a new job but already had a weeks vacation planned. I just told them and they had no issue with it. I worked 1 week and took a week off and then came back and really dug into the position.

Just tell them up front. One day isnt a big deal. I started a new job 6 weeks before my wedding, so worked for less than 6 weeks,then took 2.5 weeks off. It was unpaid but they were happy to accomodate!

ITA with the others, I would just tell them. I took a new job when I had an already planned vacation the following month, and just let them know this (was unpaid though).
