Re: starting cereal and oatmeal question

Always give a bottle before, so they get the vitamins and nutrition in. Solids at this age are just for practice and allergy testing, it doesn't matter what you do, just stay within guidelines.

Its best to try a new food for a few days, before introducing another, just to be sure and rule it out for allergies. Other than that, I got the okay to do pretty much whatever, and the best advice I got was to follow DS's cues. And feed them as much as they want, after they've had what they should have from the bottle/boob.

Re: starting cereal and oatmeal question

I never gave DS rice cereal - started only with oatmeal... just start with it very liquidy at first and thicken over the next several weeks/months as they get used to it. Have fun and take lots of pics!

Re: starting cereal and oatmeal question

We started rice cereal at 4.5 months; 1 tsp the first week, 2 tsp the second week and now he eats between 3-4 tsp. After 2 weeks we introduced oatmeal, so now we give him oatmeal in the late morning after a bottle and then rice in the evening after a bottle, or sometimes before. Even when he has cereal first, he still finishes the bottle!

I just bought some stage 1 veggies which we plan on trying this weekend or next!

Re: starting cereal and oatmeal question

Make sure you offer the cereal 30 mins or so AFTER the bottle. The bottle is more important at this stage.

Also, make the rice cereal more on the watery side as they tend to gag a little if its too thick. Start with one tablespoon and up it when you see you DC has got the hang of it/wants more. I would do rice cereal only for 4 days straight, if there are no reactions and all is well then I would move to oatmeal. Again for 4 days.

have fun!!
