Starting daycare today & a rough night [LONG SORRY]

I'm exhausted and so upset we had a rough night with Ryan starting daycare today. He went down no problem (early actually) around 8:15PM and woke up around 2:30AM. We had been letting him cry a little and it hasn't been more than 10-minutes. So he's crying and I'm getting upset b/c I hate hearing him cry and I don't want him upset the night before he starts daycare (in my head I'm thinking he's thinking I'm not going to him and what's he going to think when I drop him off this morning Chat Icon ). After about 15 minutes DH rolls over and asks if he should go give him the pacifier - so now I'm stressed b/c I felt like he wasn't supporting the effort but I also knew DH had to get up at 4:30AM for work this morning so I felt bad. After 5 more minutes I go in to give him the paci and rub his back - BAD MOVE. He looked up at me and got so upset - making me more upset. 10 minutes later I return back to bed, with Ryan. I try to snuggle him and let him sleep with me - nope, no thank you mommy. I was trying to avoid feeding him b/c I know he doesn't need it. So now we're both crying. I take him back in his room, decide to feed him in the glider - he's wide awake now - looking at me - smiling, kicking around. After 10 minutes I put him back in his crib and he must have played in there for 20 minutes before he went back to sleep. I went back to bed and continued crying - went back to sleep around 4AM Chat Icon Chat Icon

Now Ryan's been up in his crib since 6:45AM talking to himself. I'm pumping. I do not have the energy to bring him to daycare today. I feel like we're starting off on the wrong foot. I don't want him to be cranky from his rough night.
Am I just making excuses? I'm ready to just not go in to work today. DH will probably kill me if I call him and say I'm not going - he wants me to just get it over with already. Chat Icon

What a rough night for both of you. Did you go in?

Ryan knows you are there for him and he'll have a great time at Daycare... There are other babies to look at and watch and they have lots of toys to play with. I left Megan at Daycare today and I left her in the exersaucer - she gave me a smile and went right to playing. I know its tough- but everything will be fine...

Yes, you are making excuses!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon He'll be fine!! I promise Chat Icon The first week si the roughest, and it'a a lot to get used to. Not only the fact that DS will be in daycare, but that you're back to work. It will all work out. Soon enough you'll see that he really likes daycare and he gets to play ALL DAY LONG!! I wish I could do that!! Chat Icon

Re: Starting daycare tonight & a rough night [LONG SORRY]

Well I took him and I just got into the office at 10:45AM. I just called to check on him and his usual 90-minute nap was only 20-minutes Chat Icon

How long does it usually take for them to adjust to napping at daycare? Seriously, I wouldn't be able to nap if there were 5 other babies in the room crying, playing, etc.

I tried to be chipper around him so I didn't upset him when I left - he just looked tired and thoroughly confused. Poor guy. Missing him so much already Chat Icon

DD never sleeps as well at daycare as she does at home. Some days she sleeps less than an hour the whole day and then there are times when one of her naps are 2.5 hours. Most of the time it is somewhere in between but less than if she is home. I've learned to accept it and I just make sure she naps when she is with me and gets a good night sleep on daycare days. she often will fall asleep in the car on the way home and that short nap helps her to be less cranky in the evening.

Good Luck!!! He's gonna do great

Re: Starting daycare tonight & a rough night [LONG SORRY]

Jessee, this is harder on you than it is on him. I don't know how long it will take Ryan to adjust, but I'm 100% positive that by next week this will be old news to him.

I was lucky it only took Elizabeth one morning of tears to adjust. But Elizabeth is VERY attached to me and can't stand not to be touching me if I'm in the room (and I'd be lying if I said I didn't love it).

But the thing about these babies is once we're out of their line of vision they're okay. For us, not so much.

Re: Starting daycare today & a rough night [LONG SORRY]

My concern is that if he doesn't nap at daycare he'll be wiped when he gets home, and wanting to go to bed earlier - which I really don't want to happen since I only get to see him for an hour at night.

Re: Starting daycare today & a rough night [LONG SORRY]

Megan never naps as well at Daycare. It is something I accept - she is fine- she will get a nap when she gets home (we walk the dog together and she snoozes in the stroller) and she sleeps well at night -

Sometimes she actually gets more naps at daycare than she does with one of her grandmothers who watches her!

The first week Megan was at daycare, I called ever hour or so! call as many times as you want!...

He will adjust. I get plenty of playtime with Megan on days she is in Daycare...

He's been on the push for an earlier bedtime lately. Friday I put him in for the usually 30-40 minute nap at 6:30 and he didn't wake til 10:30PM and Saturday night 11:30PM! I only let him sleep for 30-minutes at 6PM last night.

Maybe I shouldn't do this, but I wake Megan up after an hour napping when she's napping close to bedtime- so I won't let her nap past 7:45 and bedtime is at 9.

What time do you put her in for that nap? DH is picking up Ryan around 4:30 - I asked him to try playing, feeding him and putting him down around 6 in the hopes he'll be up by 7/7:30. Let's see what happens tonight - I'm sure he'll be Chat Icon

Yep- I took the other job. Still freaking out about it!! I start on 9/30.

As far as naps go, DD went through a stage where she would only take one at daycare and she was so cranky when she got home. Luckily it didnt last log, and she's back to 2.

DD doesnt even look at me when I leave anymore. Chat Icon All she cares about is the toys and the other babies.

Usually between 6:30 and 7:30 - I won't let her nap for longer than an hour - so If she starts napping at 7, I'll wake her up at 8 - then its the race to feed, play and nightime ritual by 9:00! It always works out though- She rarely will sleep for a full hour.

Do you just nurse her after this nap or give her cereal/jarred food?

I try to give her solids before the nap, if I did, then she nurses or she gets a bottle. If not, then solids and we try to nurse, but usually she is too full from solidsChat Icon to nurse. Really Jessee- I have no idea if I'm doing it right or not- so don't rely on me!Chat Icon
