Re: State list of schools to close
My school is on it. Not the original 8 that are slated to close, but the "26" they are considering. I've been here for 8 years and every year we are on someone's list. We'll see what happens.

AAAK!!! this is news to me and DH (as you know, he works in your building). he did hear they are being watched, but more of the gossip was that because Jamaica is closing, your building is worried about absorbing all those kids, not actually closing. who the hell knows what is going on... DH said that the Acuity team (or whatever they're called) was pleased when they came in in the fall, so i wonder why they say they might close. DH also heard that the school might turn into smaller schools within a school.
congrats on your baby!!!!

Re: State list of schools to close
Wow, Bloomberg - way to try to close every comprehensive high school in the city. I work in a small school in Queens that's already overbooked by 40+ kids (which is huge considering we're supposed to be capped at 400 due to space. We're on half of a floor). Where are all of these kids going to go???

Re: State list of schools to close
My husband is at one of the schools that they are "closing." Most of these schools are going to reopen in a different format and organizational model. If you take a look at the schools on the list, most of the school building are very large. This is all part of Bloomberg's plan to destroy all larger schools and create small schools throughout the city. The problem is that many teachers are going to lose their jobs or become ATR's. Many say this is also an effort to get rid of the higher paid older teachers to dump some salaries considering once the new schools open, everyone will have to re-interview for a job. Some of the schools have actually improved over the past few years. This is soooooooo stressful!! My husband's school is having a community mtg this week.

Re: State list of schools to close
I don't have an exact source for this- but I have heard that there are still many Principals Academy people who need jobs, and IIRC, they are being paid regardless. Making more smaller schools will increase the need for administrators.
I really feel for the staffs and students at these schools. I experienced a restructuring in 2004- it was on someone's whim, we were not a failing school- and it has been a disaster. Overcrowding went up (we were already way over cap) because classrooms became offices and after five years one of the schools is a total disaster and the other one is not much better. My school absorbed most of the experienced staff and we have done well, but so many kids have been screwed.
Bloomberg also wants to get rid of the ATRs- and put in more charters. It would save a lot of money in the long run if he is able to pare down the veteran teachers and replace them with TFA teachers and Fellows.
