State mandated Hep B shot for newborns
At my hospital tour, the nurse said they give the baby a hep b vaccine as a state mandate to protect your baby in case you were infected & didn't know. It was really started for poorer areas where women don't always have the best prenatal care. She made it sound as if there was no opting out of it.
Anyway, so I asked my midwife about it & she said if you tell them you will have it done by your pediatrician at a later time, they won't do it (& they won't lecture you about it either)
Thought I would share b/c I know don't want my 1-day old getting any hep b vaccines

they told us this at winthrop also. apparently they will ask u if u want them to do it or to wait for your pediatrican to do it. i agree--id rather wait and have my ped to it...i think they have to do it by 12 wks!!

We didn't have it done at the hospital, but she got the shot when she was 3 days old at her first pediatrician visit. They generally do it very soon after birth.
If it makes you feel any better, she didn't even cry when they gave her the shot!

the hospital didnt do the shot (they didnt even ask)... my DS got it at his first pediatrician visit...

I also delivered at Winthrop and they gave us the option and I told them that I would have it done with her 2 month shots and my DH just had to sign a form stating what we are doing. We were not questioned on our decision at all.

I delivered at Huntington, when DH and I went in for the induction, they gave us a waiver to sign if we wanted to have the ped. do it instead.

Both my girls got the Hep B shot at birth, it's no big deal, no reactions to it. They have to take blood and give them shots anyways.
it's one less shot they have to get when they are older.

I'm not in NY but I refused it here as well. DD is almost 2 and still has not had Hep B. She's not at risk for it now IMO so we'll wait until I feel she needs it.

Yes. This is good to know. I refused the shot -- my baby did not need that shot when he was less than 24 hours old.

I have refused it for both my boys and will refuse it again for my baby girl.
IMO, there is no reason in the world to give a 24 hour newborn a shot for something there is no chance of her having especially when I have been tested for everything under the sun and know that I am 100% healthy.

My ped. and I discussed this before giving birth and I did NOT let them give DS the hep shot at the hospital. I did not think it was necessary. I waited until he was 2 months old when he got his 1st shot.
