State Senate OKs summer suspension of gas tax

ALBANY - After nearly three hours of debate, the Senate passed legislation yesterday intended to suspend the state's gasoline tax this summer. The measure does not have support in the Assembly or a commitment from the governor.
The bill, which would suspend the 32-cent tax from Memorial Day through Labor Day, passed the Senate 46-15. All nine Long Island senators backed it.

They are dropping the 32 cent tax, so in theory anyway, it should drop 32 cents....

Either other taxes, or the roads will just not get repaired, causing damage to cars, making roads and bridges unsafe, and costing more to repair next year.... I think it's just an election-year ploy....

But most people just see the cut and think it is all positive. I have to admit I didn't see the downside until he mentioned it, I was all for it!

The average price of gas has increased about 36 cents in the last month.... a 32 cent drop will be erased in a few weeks of increases, and we won't even notice it. Once they drop the tax, how are they going to reimplement it? Are people going to be OK with the price jumping 32 cents in one day when they put the tax back?
(Got the price increase from http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx You can put in Long Island, NY, and look at the trends....)

I heard this morning that the Dems & the Gov are against it, I don't think it will even go through.
ETS-if "we" didn't re-elect an oil man & if "we" would have demonstrated some restraint & common sense in our vehicle selections that last 6 years we wouldn't be in this mess!

ETS-if "we" didn't re-elect an oil man & if "we" would have demonstrated some restraint & common sense in our vehicle selections that last 6 years we wouldn't be in this mess!
There are two different taxes being discussed. The one that I quoted is NY tax. I think you are referring to the Federal tax. The fed tax repeal isn't getting very much support. I'm surprised the NY one is getting as much backing as it is...

I believe in the end this is going to cause more damage than good. The tax goes into highway repairs, which provides jobs and stimulus to the economy. If there are no construction jobs added to the economy I don't see it's going to help make an improvement.
Also what is to stop the oil companies from saying good people didn't flinch at $3.81 now that it's dropped down to 3.49 let's just raise it back up there. In the end the money that NY will lose from taxes will go to the oil companies, I think.

Sorry, you're right.  Then again, I am a little, too. The same issue is going on at the Fed level. Some people are pushing it, but the majority of officials aren't.
ITA with Jamie.... I think if it did pass, it would cause more problems than it would potentially "fix"....

Again, dumbest idea ever, won't put money in anyone's pocket other than the oil companies, and will drive prices UP by increasing demand rather than lowering it.
We need to take MORE taxes and invest in sustainable energy.

if I fill up from empty I will save $8 on a 25 gallon fill

most cars have a 15 gallon tank- that's a savings of $4.80 from empty
again- Big deal
when you get a flat from hitting a pot hole that wasn't fixed- it's going to cost you a lot more then that!

Also, in September there will be a huge jump in the price of gas which will probably cause more of an upset.
Also, people will also stop thinking about ways to conserve, i.e. carpooling, etc.

Oh I sure hope the dont do that. Since I live in PA and work in NYC i am already annoyed that they raised the price on toll bridges.

You mean to make up for the lost tax revenue!
Ugh. My tolls were only raised a little it, but it's insane how much it costs to commute!
