Still can't believe this happened to my cat (he's okay though)
Backstory - our kitten is now about 17 1/2 weeks. He's HYPER and loves to run around our apartment (we're on the 2nd floor) He also likes to wait for us by the door at the bottom of the stairs....and I am scared he is going to run out one day.
I plan in getting him microchipped, but thought it would be a good idea to get a collar and tag too. I bought one yesterday, and put it on him, and he was FINE with it! I was surprised.
Fast forward to this morning. I was getting ready for work, and see him running around like the crazy kitty he is. Then I noticed he sounded like he was coughing up a hairball (which he hasn't done yet) so I looked over and the collar was caught in his mouth holding his lower jaw open !!!
It's one of those "quick release" ones that if they get caught on something and pull hard enough it will open. That's the part that was in his mouth though!! I got sooooo scared. Thank G-d that DH was home (although sleeping) I SCREAMED for him to get up and help . He was able to get it off but I felt HORRIBLE!! All I keep thinking about is what if this happened when we were at work, my poor little Midnight!!
I guess his neck is still to little for the collar if he can get it like that. It's as tight as it goes though. We're just going to have to REALLY make sure he doesn't get out when we come home, until he's microchipped. And maybe when he's a little bigger I'll try it again.

My kitty did the same thing!!!!!!!!!!! It is so scary!!!!!!!! And he wouldnt let me help him. I was one of those release collars too! Tostito is now 2 and doesnt wear a collar. He is strictly indoors and has no urge to go out so we dont have one for him
But I know EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL!
Glad the lil one is ok!!

When my kitty was only a couple of weeks old, she somehow got her head caught between the spindles on the back of the dining room chair. It's literally, no bigger than an inch of space there. I don't know how it happened, and I dont want to htink what could have happened if we werent home.

It's releaving to know that I am not the "only one" and I am not a bad "kitty mommy" for this happening!
DH said NO collar for Midnight. We'll have him microchipped when he gets nutered in a few weeks and PRAY that is enough. We'll be extra extra extra careful when opening the door to come in the apartment!!

OMG how scary! I'm glad he's ok!
Our cat Nugget is an indoor cat--but he has gotten out a few times. He flat-out refuses to wear a collar. But he is microchipped, so I know if anyone ever picks him up, he'll find his way back to us.

That happened to my kitty too when she was a few years old and ever since then I stopped putting the collars on her. It was a few times and it scared me because what happened if we weren't home. I think it was actually the same collar you had. Right now she doesn't wear a collar (she's 9 1/2) and since she is an indoor cat and does not go near doors I am safe without one. Plus she really hates the collar.
I am glad your kitty is fine. I would try and find another collar maybe one with notches and try the one he has now when he gets bigger. I think those might be better.
