Stocking Medical/First Aid Supplies for baby

What, if any kind of medical/first aid supplies should I have on hand for the little one? I'm having a girl, so no circumcision.

Are those big Q-tips necessary? What are they for?

Cotton balls - what are they for?

What about tylenol, cold remedies, etc. Since I'm having a winter baby, I want to have a few things on hand just in case.

Anything needed for naseau/diarreah?

What about diaper rash ointments - did you just buy a few different brands to try?

I already have a nail file and clippers, and thermometer on my registry.

Sorry for all the questions

You can only use tylenol up to 6 m, so definitely have that (or generic acetametaphen) in the house. Advil is good after 6 m so if you get that, just check the dates.

Q tips we used with rubbing alcohol around the cord stump until it fell off, per the ped. Some say to clean it, some say not to.

I haven't used a cotton ball in years (and my daughter is 22 m and my son is 4 weeks). So no idea about those.

You want to have a rectal thermometer. Most peds offices won't accept any temp but a rectal if you call and report a fever. It's also good for stimulating poop when they get backed up.

Gas drops are good. Some swear by gripe water but we've never used it.

You may want to get some baby vicks. If the baby gets a cold/congested, you can put it on their feet with socks over it.

Saline drops for baby's nose are a good one too since it's the only cold remedy you can try.

A&D ointment is great. Just the one that's plain a&d. You can get that or vaseline. Putting that on after every diaper change can minimize the need for any diaper rash cream. The one we use is aveeno, but it's because I'm allergic to aloe so I stay away from many types because they have aloe. Butt paste brand is great too for very bad diaper rash.

They'll give you a bulb aspirator at the hospital and it's better than any of the ones you buy.

I think that's the bulk of it for the beginning. HTH.
