Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
The U of STony Brook Denatl School has a dental clinic - has anyone been? Specifically I'm asking about the pediatric dentists. I've mad an appt for my DD, but I'm rethinking if this is the best route. She won't even let me brush her teeth, I'm doubting she'll be an easy patient.

Re: Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
That's funny you posted this, I JUST called them because I need a wisdom tooth pulled that sent me to the ER dentist over the weekend. I haven't been there before, so I don't have any experience with them though. They are students that do the work with a dentist overseeing them. I'm not sure if it's like a regular pediatric dentist's office with the TV's, colorful rooms, etc.
If you have looking for a ped. dentist, Dr. Adelberg in Smithtown is GREAT. Very patient with the kiddos. DS went years ago, but unfortunately they don't take our insurance anymore.

Re: Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
I went to Dental Assisting School there and we assisted the Dr's in the clinic there. And I dated one of them for many years. If it was me or my child I wouldn't go there at all. It is such a cold sterile enviroment and honestly those Dr's are still in training.

I'm sure it IS cold and sterile, but the students ARE overseen by dentists, so I don't think they are going to screw up you or your kids teeth. I know several adults that go there and have never had an issue with the actual work that's done.

They def can screw up. I know this for a fact. After they finish a procedure they have the Professors check your teeth. It could be too late at this point.
My Aunt did go there and will never go back.
Plus it is not the type of enviroment that I would think ones DC would feel comfortable in. I know my DC wouldn't.

Re: Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
My friend's husband went there. He had really, really bad teeth and after three consultations with private dentists who wanted 40K plus, they decided to go this route. He had extensive work done, over a period of two years, and from what I understand was generally happy. BTW, he did pay but my understanding was it was significantly cheaper.

Re: Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
I wouldn't have a child go to the clinic. I don't think the care is worse than a regular dentist, and the work of the residents is checked by dentists, but the procedures generally take 2-3 times the amount of time when done by a regular dentist when you include the checking over, etc. It's just a lengthy procedure generally done to save money for those without insurance, but if you have insurance, definitely go for a regular dentist. I have a great dentist near SB who specializes in ped. dentistry if you need a referral.

I don't have dental insurance and to pull a wisdom tooth at the regular dentist is $$$$. The dental clinic is about $100 from what I hear.

Re: Stony Brook Dental clinic? Anyone been?
I did a rotation there in hygiene school and then went back there to get my anesthesia license a few years ago. Personally I would only use them if money was tight. I didn't care for them and this is coming from a dental professional.
