Re: stonybrook vs st charles
My sister delivered at Stony Brook in January, before they redid the maternity ward and I thought it was waaaaay better than the maternity ward at Good Sam (where I delivered 4 months before her) My good friend is a nurse at Stony Brook and said that the new ward is like an awesome hotel. I am delivering there in March because I switched practices and my midwives keep raving about the new ward, telling me that I am so lucky. So needless to say, I am very excited lol.

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
I delivered DS at SB 2 years ago, and will be delivering there in spring again. Private rooms and bathrooms, amazing food, no way would I choose St. Charles.

stony brook hands- down.
I felt like I was in a hotel.
Great food with a huge delicious menu (the cold cuts were even Boar's Head!) and it was beauuuttttiiifulll. Every nurse was AMAZING. Loooooove it. I can't wait to go back there again. It kind of felt like a mini-vacation.
and I HATE hospitals!
eta: big, pretty, private bathrooms.
and automatically you get your own private hospital room. can't beat that.

I agree...and their visiting hours were open. I know St. Charles you can only come at certain times.

St. Charles.
Though they do not promise a private room, I have delivered there twice, and both times had a private room.
For both deliveries, I had the same nurses....and they remembered me..shows a for their turnover, etc. They were ALL amazing..from the labor room, the nursery, and the mommy nurses.
The view from the labor rooms were insane. Both times had goregous views of the water, and it was so peaceful.
The breakfast buffet and food were seriously amazing.
Most importantly, I like that it is a smaller hospital, and I felt like everyone who worked there were really close...like a family.
I honestly cannot say enough about St. Charles!

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
I could not deliver at stony brook because they don't take my insurance, but i really like St. Charles a lot. All the nurses were wonderful and the food was fantastic. Seriously, I still talk about it. If we had another baby I would be happy to deliver there again. I was also alone in the room the whole time I was there.

ITA! I loved St Charles. And had two personal very bad experiences with SB. And it was major things. I also really like ST Charles visiting hours and sercuity. I personally wouldnt choice a hospital by what the rooms look like.

I forgot about the NICU--I never anticipated having to use the NICU, but DS was born in distress and was in the NICU for a week. Had I been in St. Charles, he would have been transferred to Stony Brook anyway.

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
I delivered at St. Charles and LOOOOOOOOOVED it! LOVED it!! It was small, quiet, and SUPER, SUPER clean!! And the food was SOOOOOO good!! The nurses were also very nice and attentive. I was very happy with my care there and any future children will be delivered there too!
Edit - I actually REALLY like the limited visiting hours. It was just enough time to visit with people but plenty of time for me to relax, recover, and be alone with DH and DD. I would NOT in any way want open hours where people could come all day long whenever they wanted. That would've been TORTURE!!

ITA with everything both these ladies said!
My son was in the NICU for a week @ St. Charles and wth the exception of one nurse that was kind of annoying and the NICU being so small, they were excellent in NICU as well
ETA: Although for my next pregnancy, I definitely want to tour SB hospital to check it out!

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
I don't understand about the Stony Brook visiting hours though--they def. have set hours (I know DHs could stay longer). I think it was just 3-4 hours in the afternoon?

Stony brook- had ds 5 wks early and their nicu was amazing. Also- they arent strict at all with visiting hrs and you do not feel like you are in a hospital. Great nurses, food, everything!

Just delivered there 2 weeks ago (loved it by the way!!!). Visiting hours were 2-8, but were very loosely enforced if at all.

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
Stonybrook was great. They don't even check the visiting hours, unless you don't want people there.
They just opened their new Labor and Delivery Unit and the Maternity Unit is beautiful

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
If I had a private room I wldnt care about visiting hrs. But like OP said I didnt want ppl in and out of my room all day .. esp if they were not MY visitors so I can see how the hrs differ from SB & St.Charles. I had a wonderful experience @ Charles and wld go back in a heartbeat.. that breakfast buffet was YUMMMMOOO and you can eat as much as you wanted. Who doesn't like that? Nurses and staff were awesome.. I went home day after I delivered.. wish I stayed another day..

I delivered a kid at each, first child st charles and second child at Stony Brook... If i had the choice I would pick st charles... the nurses were soo much kinder and better to me! The ones at Stony Brook were horrific...

Re: stonybrook vs st charles
I delivered at St. Charles and their labor and delivery nurses were amazing! I truthfully cannot say enough about the attention and care they gave. The night nurse came to see me twice once I was moved over on the maternity floor just to see how I was. I paid for a private room because the day I delivered there weren't any private rooms but the next day there were a few private rooms. They are very lenient with their visitors. During the 2-4 visiting hours which are for grandparents and siblings, I had everyone, my brothers, sil, aunts uncles, and my parents they never said anything. I will be their again in May, and I am confident its the right choice.
Just wanted to add
The food was great and the hospital is so clean!!!
