Stop & Shop in Levittown
I don't go there usually but I went today to pick up a few things. I bought laundry detergent. The guy in front of me was having issues and kept the line waiting but I was patient..after all, what am I doing? Laundry today..I'm in no rush..
I happened to mention it to him about the laundry. The check out clerk asked, you are doing laundry on Easter? I replied that I don't celebrate it and it's just another Sunday for me.
She asked, "you don't celebrate Easter?"
"No, I don't." She replied with, "oh are you Jewish?"
I said yes. I must have grown horns or something because the look she gave me confused the crap out of her. Then she recovered by wishing me a happy Passover. Good recovery sister. I thanked her and wished her a happy holiday and went my own way.
Am I the only Jewish person she ever met?

My FIL wished me a happy easter yesterday and I almost said you too. Just caught myself at the last second and said have a great day.

Agreed -- I do that at the cafeteria at work all the time. The cashier says "Enjoy" and I say "you too!"
I'm sorry you had an uncomfortable experience, Susan.

Yes, it's weird! It's not like like we live in a very small Jewish community. NY/LI has a VERY large Jewish community.
Imagine how confusing it is for people with DH and I. I have a Jewish lastname (DH is Jewish) and I am Catholic. They all get confused on what they should tell me. They are almost apologetic for it when they wish me a "Holiday" as in they are scared to say the wrong holiday.

Just funny, I've gotten similar reactions before. A lot of the folks I work with are Christian and they don't get the "yid" thing. I left early on Thursday to prep for Passover sedar and my boss didn't know what to wish me. I laughed, told her it's a happy holiday with a solemn story that ultimately gave us freedom. It's called Passover. We both laughed.
It was the first time however that someone was in shock that I didn't celebrate Easter or any other Christian holiday. Even if she said happy Easter and left it at that, I wouldn't have cared. It's still a nice sentiment.

Re: Stop & Shop in Levittown
I would have said - "Jesus was a jew who never celebrated Easter either!" And left here there trying to figure that one out as I left.

Re: Stop & Shop in Levittown
I am a Christian who was actually praying yesterday that the owners of the drive through Dunkin Donuts did not celebrate Easter. I had a cranky baby and needed a caffiene jolt.
I was surprised that the roads were SO dead yesterday. I know that a large percentage of the population doesn't celebrate Easter, but I guess I figured more people would be out and about than there were.

I know..I noticed the same. I also noticed that a lot of folks who were on the road don't know how to drive!
A lot of places weren't open. I guess people figured that most places were closed and stayed home.
I had a lot of cars on my street though..lots of family get togethers.
