strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
so I heard that there are certain towns that ARE a certain religion. as in, the town govt. (or council whathaveyou) are all of a particular religion and the schools and local govt is funded as such.
I heard this in particular about Goshen being Hasidic.
I am not sure what this means...if anything...or how it impacts those residents that are not Hasidic.
I an wondering though, if this is some kind of urban legend type of thing.
I don't care about enclaves of ANY kind...but I was told it could effect me if the local govt catered to and was a part of a particular relgion.
Again, I have no problem with Hasidics or ANY ONE else. I just heard something and am looking for information.
If you'd like to answer via fm...that would be great too.
TIA.
ETA: sorry. meant to post on home board. I am sure it will be moved shortly.

Did you see this on Law & Order? There is a town upstate that is 100% Hassidic, the citizens & gov't, even the EMS and schools.

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
I don't know about certain towns being completely all one religion, but there are certain communities where the VAST majority of the residents are a certain, particular religion or ethnicity. it happens all over the place.
For example, there are some towns on LI where this is the case. One example that comes to mind for me is the 5 Towns in Nassau. One of those towns, Lawrence, is primarily Orthodox Jewish. I don't know about the government explicitly catering to the ONE religion, but for example, the Lawrence Public Schools have suffered because most of the residents send their children to Orthodox Hebrew schools, which of course is their choice and their right. However, this has negatively affected those that must rely on the public schools because funding is way down because the budget does nto get passed often because the vast majority of people do not use the public schools anyway.
I don't think this meant to purposely exclude others, it just happens because the vast majority want private religious schools for their children.
I am not sure if this is what you meant, but it was one of the few examples i could think of.

I knew about it from an Orthodox friend but I also saw L&O.
ets: Goshen is not the all Hassidic town. It is 82% White and 10% "Other". They missed 8% in the breakdown, lol. Wow, "other" that is really PC...circa 1945.

Call me ignorant, but are Hasidic Jews not considered white? I'm not being a smarta$$. I honestly thought they would be.

I did not think Goshen was predominantly Hasidic, but do know that Monsey and surrounding areas definitely are.

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
I had family that lived in Goshen, they were Catholics of a Polish & Italian background & I'm pretty sure they kids went to public school. We weren't very close, but I have been to their house, and I don't remember there ever being any mention of a Hasidic population, let alone a religously controlled government.
It's possible that it exists, but I'm pretty sure it's not Goshen.

Monroe and Monsey are very Hasidic. I don't think Goshen is though.

I am not sure if what you heard was also related to a Supreme Court decision that somewhat addressed this issue with respect to schools. It is called Board of Education of Kiryas Joel Village School District v. Grumet, 512 U.S. 687 (1994).
There is an explanation of the case on Wkipedia and you can google it for more information.

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
I live in Monroe, NY (orange Cty). Kyrias Joel (in Orange) and Monsey (In Rockland Cty) are Hassidic and have Hassdic SD.
Goshen is Hassidic, actually Goshen is where The Orange County Courthouse and County Clerk are. It is a town of lawyers and businesses. I used to work there and have NEVER Seen an Hassdic person in Goshen. The only school district that is controlled by Hassidc people is Kyrias Joel and that is b/c it is a incorporated village with in the Monroe-Woodbury School District. There was a BIG debate up here about have our tax dollars fund separate school buses for Kyras Joel (the boys and girls are bussed separately), and our taxes funding separate schools the OUR kids are not allowed to go to. Eventually they separated from the Monroe-Woodbury SD and created their own and pay their own taxes.

NO WAY! there's a public school which busses boys and girls SEPERATELY???!
Now I've heard of everything. I've always been under the impression that while a community could be almost entirely one ethnic/religous group, the town gov't would have to remain religiously neutral no matter what.

Believe it. Orginally they wanted to stay as Monroe-Woodbury so that the SD's Tax $$$ would go to them.
They calmed religious differences or something (I do not know th legal term) that allows them to have separate busing b/c in their religion boys and girls are schooled separately. Well, as you can imagine everyone else in the SD who pays taxes filliped out and Kyras Joel decided to become their own SD and Incorporated village.
BTW...Hep B is prevalent there too. We were at my ped's office one day and they asked me if DD was vaccinated for Hep B. She was and of course I asked why??? and one of the nurses told me that they had a few kids in Kyaras Joel have had Hep B and they wanted to make sure she was vaccinated.
They keep to themselves for the most part, BUT I was in Target on day and there was a man w/a baby. Grace kept saying "baby, baby" so I said "AWWW, how cute...how old is she??" the guy looked at me and walked away. I was like I said "wow, I was trying to be nice" and wlked away. The next day a friend told me that the men cant talk to women??? I have no idea if this is true.

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
As I've written about in the past, I grew up in the OCNY. The issues with Kiryas Joel have been going on for years and years now.
Goshen is definitely not Hasidic. That was where my mother was born and raised.

Don't. Even. Get. Me. Started. about Kiryas Joel.
ETA: Goshen is lovely BTW.
Posted by Ophelia I am not sure what this means...if anything...or how it impacts those residents that are not Hasidic.
Well it doesn't affect the residents of Kiryas Joel because you'd be hard pressed to find a resident thats not Hasidic.
I don't care about enclaves of ANY kind...but I was told it could effect me if the local govt catered to and was a part of a particular relgion.
They do block vote and they for sure have some politicians in their corner. Big ones, not just local gov't. Thats how they try to influence Monroe Town elections. Also one nasty move was to put a full page ad in a local paper endorsing a certain person "A" running for office. They actually wanted the person "B" to win but publically said they supported the other so everyone else would vote against them.

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
here is a link to information about Hasidic jews if anyone is interested in learning more.
I have to say being a jew it is sometimes hard for me to understand how the religion is manifested so differently for them, and also I think it depends where they are located.
I have worked with a lot of Hasidic in brooklyn - they will talk to me (but prefer to deal with my father) but will not shake hands with or touch a woman. (it has to do with your period believe it or not).
Some Hasidic men wont even touch other men (has to do with ummm....ejaculation actually).
Also - most of the time their first language is actually Yiddish and I wonder in KJ how well they actually know english.

Their first language is Yiddish but I haven't come across anyone from KJ yet that did not know Elnglish as well.
They speak to each other in Yiddish, they converse with others in English.
