Also - most of the time their first language is actually Yiddish and I wonder in KJ how well they actually know english.
Their first language is Yiddish but I haven't come across anyone from KJ yet that did not know Elnglish as well.
They speak to each other in Yiddish, they converse with others in English.
thanks for the clarification -I wasn't sure :)

Re: strange question regarding religion and certain towns above the Bronx.
A friend of ours who is an FBI agent worked for over 6 years on a case regarding a ficitious school that was set up in Rockland County (specifically New Square) by the local Hasidiac community. They were able to defraud the Department of Education out of $30+ million dollars.
He said that was the tip of the iceberg. Since he worked specifically with the DOE, what they passed on to the DOH was the section 8 housing, the improvements to the "housing", etc that these people were claiming. All of which were found to be living in Israel.
Bill Clinton pardoned the four leaders (Benjamin Berger, David Goldstein, Jacob Elbaum and Kalman Stern) that were convicted. The entire bloc of that community voted for Hillary Clinton for Senate desipite having a conservative voting records and voting for a woman, no less. My friend was disgusted that almost a decade of work came down to nothing.
Such a shame. Politics is a dirty business. It sickens me that they have (literally) 10 kids while collecting welfare benefits for each one.

My friend lives in Monsey (?) and she said that tensions are really high between Hasidics and non-Hasidics. She is Jewish, but she said that if you are not Hasidic, they don't want anything to do with you. She also said the same thing about the Section 8 housing and that some of the women would be in the supermarket using food stamps wearing fur coats! Also she said that people come to her house every week and want to buy it, but her family refuses and the house has been vandalized. They also close streets on Saturdays so you can't drive incertain areas. She has complained about the tax thing too because she said that they can receive tax breaks and don't have to pay taxes because of a religious exemptoin (?) which affects the town budget.
