Strange Soliciter Yesterday
My doorbell rang yesterday afternoon and a young guy (18-21) was soliciting money for a trip to London. He started the conversation with "I live on your street." My husband and I live in the same town that we teach in and we know virtually every kid around. My husband knew that this was a crock of s**t so he started questioning him with when he graduated, what house he lives in, etc. The kid said that his parents "just" moved here and yadda, yadda, yadda.
Now I just got off the phone with my mom who lives across town and she had the same EXACT situation happen with a different kid yesterday. My mom is also involved with her street and the schools here and didn't know the kid either.
I'm a little creeped out. Has this happened to anyone else lately?

Is this in Sayville? If so it happened to my mom and grandma. My mom knew it was shady and told him no thanks.

Yes, it is Sayville. We know so many kids around here from our younger siblings and teaching so we thought it was really shaddy too!

Yeah, my "step" father is a Sgt, in the 5th and he said there have been a few calls about this. He said the kids are just scamming cash, not malicious just looking for money.

this happened about a year ago to me, I am in PJ, told him no thanks and basically shut the door on him.
He was very pushy......but I just wanted to share with you.....told me it was a contest to go to Europe

Was he selling Magazines. Shortly after we moved in some kid came knocking on my door. My dog was a baby and I kept the door open so he could look outside (I still do because he could sit there and not move or make a sound the entire day) I openeded the door to talk to him and HE CAME IN MY HOUSE AND SAT ON MY STEPS INSIDE MY HOUSE!!!!!!!!!! I told him I had no money to buy anything he looked around my house and said "it looks like you have plenty of money" I was like uhhhh get out of my house! He then said "you aren't going to help me out with my trip" UM what part of GET OUT OF MY HOUSE DIDN'T YOU GET?

This happened to my mom in stony brook last weekend. she was selling childrens books to fund her trip to paris. She goes to CW Post...blah blah blah...

I had a young guy ring my doorbell last night. I didn't answer it. Wonder if it was the same scam. I'm in Nassau.

I don't even answer the door when i see kids or even adults come up the walk. It is usually some stupid scam or fundraiser. They bombard you at the stores too while walking in and out and I just tell them no. It is ridiculous.

Funny - I live in Sayville and on Sunday we had a kid come to the house with some sort of a badge asking for a donation - he said he was from 'down the street' - but he was asking for money for a youth group. My husband told him that we only contribute to certain organizations and the kid asked him WHICH organizations! I felt bad - but we did not give him any money. I am fairly certain he doesn't live on our street...
ETA: He was carrying some big blue plastic box.. he might have had candy in it or something. I felt REALLY bad for him. He looked very dejected.

I love those. I had one a few years ago, kid telling me he just moved in and was raising money for some trip and was selling magazines. I started grilling him and asking him for phone numbers. I had my cordless in my hand and asked for his mothers phone number so I could call her and tell her what her son is doing and will be calling the school to verify they approve of door to door knockers doing solicitations. His response to me was uh you have yourself a great day and ran. 
You want to try and pull one over me ha, I got something you dont you little snot, I got myself 2 edamacations, book smarts and street smarts

I posted about something similar in holbrook in the last few months...but last night my dad had the same thing happen in Bayport, my stepmom gave the kid a check...but called the kid on it when she saw him around town waiting on different streets while she picked up or dropped off my brother and sister...she stopped payment on the check and called the 5th pct.

We got that last summer. A guy around 18 collecting money to sponsor him to go to mexico! We are a few towns west...I was like - give me money so I can go away!
