Strategies for a dyslexic student?
I just found out I'm going to be having a dyslexic student in my 8th grade English class next year. The mother is concerned because it's a pretty severe case and she's worried about his English work...which I totally understand.
Does anyone have any strategies for making the work easier for him in my class?

I mount dittos and text on neon paper. It has helped my students read and attend.

Is the child coming with an IEP? If so, that will list all the program modifications that last year's teachers found to work with him.

I have no idea. I just got an email about him being in my class, and the mother is apparently very nervous about English, for obvious reasons. I'm planning to speak with his English teacher from last year...but I was just wondering if there were any successful strategies I could start thinking about in advance.

look into bookshare and Kurzweil. bookshare with a website that allows those with print disabilities (dyslexia would be one) access to all titles online where it can be read to them, etc.
Kurzweil is a computer program where you can scan in chapters, worksheets, etc. where the computer can read it to them. also cool things like highlighting, vocabulary, etc.
i would think this child already has an IEP, so things should be outlined there as well.
overall, books on CD when possible, leniency when it comes to spelling and grammar (allow a spellcheck device for papers, etc.) text read aloud in class when possible, etc.
