Stray cats, I think...

We are having a bad cat issue. We are not sure if they are neighbors cats or if they are just randomn cats that the neighbors feed. Regardless, the old home owners used to let them hang out in her garage. So now, they think if our door is open it is okay to go in if a human is not in there. They scare the krap out of me but more importantly they are krapping by our side door. We have a little garden like thing there and now b/c they krap there, there is nasty krap, flys and a horrific odor. Does anyone have any solutions? or Has anyone encountered something similiar? Thanks for your help. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If they are feral, they are more afraid of you than you are of them. Did the people you bought your house from have a feral colony that they cared for?

Hmmm. Not sure what is gross, but I'd FM Reggie, she can help you find a no kill shelter.

Re: Stray cats, I think...

I lived in a ground floor garden apartment and when I moved in there were lots of cats hanging around my terrace. Sometimes they would hiss at me and not let me cross their path. Sometimes the cats would...fornicate on my terrace during the night. Chat Icon It was obvious that the prior tenant used to feed them. I am highly allergic and I noticed a lot of flyaway cat hairs all over my terrace. I noticed that neighbors would feed them, so I figured that if I gave them nothing they would stop coming to me, but they'd still be fed. That worked and after a while they stopped coming to my place. There were people who lived there that sometimes took cats to be spayed and neutered, or tried to rescue them, but I only found that out later.

I am not a cat expert but I would say not to feed them if you want them to go away. Maybe there are better things you could do to ensure their safety but I'll leave that advice to the "cat people."

By gross i mean, I don't want dirty cats coming up to me or my children. I don't know what they are carrying. All i know is their poop and urine smells and it is gross. The poop and urine is literally below a window and by my side door---that to me is gross. I just don't understand if you want a cat keep, it in your house. why does the neighborhood have to have a cat/s too?

not sure if it works or not, but i read somewhere that you can use mothballs as a deterrent for cats...

I think that in any suburban area if you leave your garage door open, you could have animals coming in.

You are probably right but these cats will stroll in if you have the doors open for a little while. For instance, if you have them open long enough to BBQ some burgers they are sneaking in. I remember cats at my parents house growing up but not as bad as this.

My dog would wander in to any BBQ if I let him off leash!!! I think you have to just change things for a bit until they go away. You should also ask around to see whose they are and maybe consider calling a humane type of rescue or someone who works with feral cats.

Re: Stray cats, I think...

I know they must be annoying, but please call a no-kill shelter to come and get them. While I understand that you don't want them around, they deserve to have nice, secure homes too Chat Icon
