student loan consolidation % (ETA: For those who consolidated recently)
Is 6.62% a good rate for consolidation?

I consolidated mine for 2.77% (about 2 years ago) and DH consolidated his for a little more than 3% (a few years ago too).

i consolidated at 3.3% - but i guess since interest rates have gone up, 6%+ might be the norm now

I wish I could have consolidated years ago, but I just graduated.
As long as I am at the "norm". It locks me in around what I am at currently.
Will rates ever go down?

Mine is also 6.2%. It is very bad, BUT there's nothing that can be done, except sign up for direct withdrawel from your account. You can save a quarter of a point.

I was also one of the lucky ones and consolidated at 3.25%. I hear 6 is what it is now.

Rates can go down. When I first graduated from college, my rate was 8% (Back in 1999). I consolidated in 2003 for 3%.

Yes.. that was what I consolidated at last month... I couldn't wait to see if the rates went down, conslidating cut my payments in half, the # was out of control. I am hoping I will be able to pay it off before the 20 years.

DH missed the increase 2 years ago and I almost killed him. He had been in the 2% range, then up to 3ish, then finally consolidated last year at 5ish.
6ish sounds right for 2007

I consolidated a loan last year (8/06) at 6.25% So that rate sounds reasonable.

Wow. I'll count my blessings that I did it in 2003. My rate is 1.875%!
ETA: It initially was at 2.875 but it went down 1.0% after making 36 on-time payments. It's been at 1.875 since last year.

This issue really pisses me off. The whole thing about taking out a loan is no big deal because of low interest is bull. I owe about $15,000 for grad school. I am going to try to pay it off as fast as I possible can.
