student's mom passed away :(
Hi guys.... I just got a depressing notification... the mother of one of my 4th graders from this year (I know you're not supposed to have favorites, but he was one of mine) passed away.... I am heartbroken for him. I am the gifted teacher in the school so I will have him next year and the year after, too. I am going to go to the wake tonight.... but I want to do something for him for the school year and sort of make sure he's taken care of ....what is something appropriate that I can do for him?

Re: student's mom passed away :(
When my mom died when I was in fifth grade, my teacher gave my dad her phone number and I guess they ended up talking to each other, because she took me out for ice cream with her daughters. It was so memorable and special for me. She turned out to be one of my favorite teachers.... and strangely enough, I ended up teaching her youngest daughter when she was in high school years later...

Re: student's mom passed away :(
I went to the wake and it was really sad... he wasn't there but as soon as the dad saw me he said he had been asking for me and was at home - and asked if I would make a stop by their house (other parents and students were there with him and another teacher as well)... of course I went.... and he was so excited to see me and hugged me hard... but then he went and played tag like a normal 9 year old ... so sad... I want to drop something by the house maybe next week or write him a letter... he's a very artistic and creative boy and I was blown away at the wake because I didn't know how talented his mom was - all of her work was prominently displayed...any ideas on something I could do?
