Stupid question about bath tubs...

Do all tubs have a slotted overflow hole? What does it mean when it lists "water depth to overflow"?

Re: Stupid question about bath tubs...

Not a stupid question...I'm not sure I know the full answer either!!

I thought only sinks have "slotted overflow holes". And I think the "water depth to overflow" is how deep the tub is....in otherwords how much water is held in it; without it being too much water

That's what I thought too at first, but I was looking at a 19" tub online and it said "water depth to overflow: 14inches" in the details. Thats why I'm confusedChat Icon

Re: Stupid question about bath tubs...

We have an old cast iron tub (our apartment is 88 years old, who knows how old the tub is) and there is no slot. Come to think of it, I don't remember ANY of my bathtubs having the slot, just sinks. Chat Icon

This is the kind of tub I grew up having and there is no slot.

Re: Stupid question about bath tubs...

I'm not familiar with the term but our bathtub does have a hole for drainage so it doesnt overflow. It's around the top of the button for opening and closing the drain. With mine, you can see it if you are looking for it, but it's not as apparent as the ones for sinks.

Re: Stupid question about bath tubs...

I'm pretty sure all tubs have an overflow drain (including the one in the pic from MissJones). It's usually hidden in the drain cover.

The "depth to overflow" is how far the drain is from the bottom. If the overflow drain is 2" above the bottom, you are only going to have 2" of water, no matter how high the sides are. (I would suggest NOT buying a tub with a 2" depth to overflow... Chat Icon Chat Icon )

Most tubs have the overflow a few inches below the top.
