stupid question about dental work
I have a cracked tooth that has started to really hurt over the past week. It's at the point where I can't drink anything without a straw, and all my food has to be soft so I don't chew that much. I am almost positive I am going to need a root canal. I am hoping to get an emergency appointment for either tomorrow or Tuesday. Is it ok to have dental work done in the first trimester? Stupid question, I know...but I really have no clue! I was going to wait until June when the baby is born, but I cannot stand this pain one more day!!

Re: stupid question about dental work
I know they say dental hygeine is very important while pregnant, and I'm fairly sure that there is a specific type of novacaine that can be used on pregnant women, no x-rays are allowed as far as I know ...I (luckily) have only had cleanings dobe while pg....Just make sure you tell them you are pg. when you book the appt. and make sure they have the right type of meds for you ...Feel better

Re: stupid question about dental work
Your dentist will want your OBs approval, which will probably be fine. He will probably have to do an xray, which is fine, and I think the main reason it is more important to get it taken care of (and get the xray, anesthesia, etc) is b/c letting it go could cause more harm (mainly the possibility of infection) than getting it fixed.

Re: stupid question about dental work
Im a dental hygienist and just wanted to give you some info. if it is an absolute emergency dental work can be done to releive the pain. If you need a root canal it will be most likely started but not completed until after the baby is born or in the 2nd trimester. (just to get you out of pain) According to the ADA,you should NOT have cleanings during your first trimester. after the 1st tri you can do cleanings and some dental work.

Re: stupid question about dental work
Like PP said, dental work must be an emergency. They REALLY try not to do anything in the 1st trimester. They prefer NO dental work at all during the whole pregnancy but if it's an emergency they will do it. Again, better in 2nd trimester if anything must be done.
Call your OB and dentist.

Re: stupid question about dental work
Thanks everyone! My first trimester is over in 2 weeks, so I could wait until then if I really had to. I have an emergenct appointment at 10:30, so we'll see what he says. Even if he can't do anything major work until the second trimester, just a little something to relieve the pain would be helpful. I haven't eaten anything solid in 3 days! I have been eating lots of soups, yogurts, puddings, etc. But I know that can't be good for the baby long term.
