Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

Those of you who take the subway I'm sure heard the warnings this morning that all backpacks are subject to search by the NYPD. Apparently groups are already organizing to sue the city, citing a breach of their civil liberties.

Thoughts?

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

yes, it's a pain - but i'd rather feel safe underground.

Back in high school, we had a bunch of bomb threats, so they checked our bags everyday we walked into the building. It was inconvinent (and, honestly, pretty pointless since they basically glanced in it) - but it took like 2 seconds, not a huge deal.

If they don't like it, don't take the subway!

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

the civil liberities union is thinking about suing ... personally, search away and search everything and everyone.
What's the alternative? My husband burying a piece of my femer bone when I get blown up because that's all that's left of me?

SEARCH EVERYONE ...

It's sad that we HAVE to live like this ...

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

although i am not liking this. But i guess i value my safety at this point more than peoples rights.

BUT i think this is very unfortunate...That we have to live under these conditions

And it isn't the subway only. I heard this is going to apply to buses AND LIRR!

I heard that they caught someone last night with a back pack of illegal guns!

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

I got checked today.....but the police officer was cute and very polite.

ETA - it was at Queensboro Plaza as I was boarding the 7 train into the city. And I'm totally OK with this - they have to find a way to increase security - I just doubt if occasional bag checks can do it - but it's a start.

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

while i think it's pointless, just b/c searches are never thorough enough, i certainly don't think people should sue over this. somebody refresh my memory, what's the 4th amendment? i think if it makes people feel better and there's even a small chance it might prevent something then search away. and hey at least now i have someone to blame when i'm late for work Chat Icon

Although I think It's a pita I don't mind because I would rather be safe than sorry.
Like Jenn said, It's a shame that we have to live in a world like this but that's the unfortunate reality.Chat Icon

Re: Subway Warnings - Checking of Bags

Although I am against it under normal conditions, I think that unfortunately in the world we now live in it is necessary to be safe. Of course, occassional bag checking isn't going to help that much...but it is a good start.

You also have the right to say no and they can't make you be searched. You just won't be able to take that train--they turn you away. So why would anyone with drugs/guns/bombs agree to be searched? Chat Icon They'd just move on to the next subway stop.

I am sorry but the police are just trying to protect the public. If peopple have something to hide they should fund another method of transportation. You can't have it both ways!
