Successful IVF with frozen sperm?

In July, DH had a testicular biopsy. They ended up taking out 5 vials of "healthy motile sperm, enough to populate the earth" (I am quoting the urologist)

My RE reminded me today that there is a chance that once they unfreeze the sperm they could be dead and do we want to use donor sperm at that point because we would have to order it ahead of time? (I am in the middle of stimming)

He caught me off guard so I thought of this later: can all of the sperm in the 5 vials be dead or is it possible that there is at least one good one to use with my eggs?

I knew this was a possibility all along but that question today was like a blow to the chest. Coupled with a few other major things going on in my life right now, it's taking all my strength to not jump off a cliff.

I apologize for the negativity. I appreciate all of the support! Does anyone have any experiences with frozen sperm?

Re: Successful IVF with frozen sperm?

my doctor did this to use too. but told me this a few days before my ERChat Icon

my mouth just dropped when i heard him ask him if something were to be wrong with our sperm if we wanted to use a donor sperm.

he said in his many years of practice that he has only seen it about twice. and the 2nd time happen not to long before he was telling me this.

i freaked out and i think i may have posted about him telling me this. if i find it ill bump it. it seems like its not to common but it could happen. i stressed big time and my sperm was fine.

im praying everything is ok with your spermChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Successful IVF with frozen sperm?

We have the same doctor Chat Icon and I assume my ER is within a few days as well. I guess its just the way he operates; asking the question at this point.

I was taken aback only because I figured that would be somewhat of a formal question that we would have to sign and document, not just a passing "oh hey..." type of thing when I am sitting there half dressed.

If you could find the post that would be great!

Re: Successful IVF with frozen sperm?

Well at least I am not overly sensitive or crazy! That is totally a question they need to ask waaaaay beforehand.

I am going again on Saturday and I plan to ask: at what point do they know if the sperm is no good? I mean I am having my eggs retrieved no matter what. So would they tell me before I go in for the transfer? Or that morning of the transfer???

Re: Successful IVF with frozen sperm?

DH and I think that he just mentioned it as a disclaimer. Regardless, it hurt!

All I can do is hope and pray at this point. I was already hoping and praying that the IVF would work in the first place, now I am praying that we have sperm that's alive too! Chat Icon
